The St. John’s Red Storm face the Providence Friars on Saturday afternoon, seeking to avenge an earlier loss. Just a few short weeks ago, Providence handed the Johnnies their only conference setback — 77-71 at Madison Square Garden. Since then, the Red Storm have been on a roll — including upending UConn a week ago. Providence, on the other hand, sits near the bottom of the Big East standings at 4-9 in conference play. We are getting a break in the point spread because of the earlier result, and because this game is in Providence, but there is no reason St. John’s shouldn’t roll in this spot. I’ll take the Johnnies -6.5.

In the first meeting, St. John’s went 20-for-71 from the field (that’s 28.2%). Let’s just start there, and ask yourself if there is any chance, any chance at all, that St. John’s does that again? Providence ranks outside the top 200 in defensive efficiency. That was a total outlier result, and I will bring out the hammer betting against that happening twice. The Friars also outscored SJU in the paint 38 to 20. Providence probably does have some advantages in the paint — but not that much. Both teams like to play fast, so expect this game to be up and down the floor, and that is yet another thing we should expect but that did not happen in the first H2H matchup. I think that first meeting is a freak outlier all the way around, so I am all in betting against it repeating itself. St. John’s should cover this one.
