Tonight’s Big 12 undercard involves the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Utah Utes. The Utes have sunk to the bottom of the conference standings at 1-11. They have lost 7 games in a row and have yet to win on the road this season. This team has some shooters, but that has not translated to much success in the win column. The Mountaineers are a good team predicated on defense, and they are especially tough at home. They had not been beaten in Morgantown all season until Baylor and Texas Tech handed them losses in their last 2 home games. The Mountaineers will be out to make a statement tonight, so let’s roll with them to win and cover.

This -10 line is suspicious to me because West Virginia does not often beat opponents by the necessary margin. The Mountaineers are nearly the slowest team in the country when they have the ball, and their defense is exhausting. You can hardly score in the paint against them, they collect practically every defensive rebound and they do not send you to the foul line. The problem is that the game total is hovering 130 — and with the Mountaineers’ style of play, a 5-point lead could seem insurmountable. Yet there is a lot of early sharp money flowing to the West Virginia side, and I am intrigued. Utah will struggle to score and it has been in the Eastern time zone and away from home for several days now, so its motivation level has to be low at this point in the season.
