Is Vanderbilt built to withstand a Wildcats attack, or will Kentucky demote the Commodores without complications? Kentucky enters this matchup ranked No. 12 in the nation at 6-1 and riding a five-game winning streak, with four of those victories coming against SEC competition. Arguably, the Wildcats are a formidable opponent for any team, especially for a Vanderbilt squad that's dropped four straight. That said, the Commodores showed over their first three games that they can find the end zone three or more times, and they may get a little help from Kentucky in a way that benefits this over. If the Wildcats build the multi-score lead many expect, they could take their foot off the gas late, opening the door for Vanderbilt to add a score or two before the final whistle.
Kentucky would certainly love to add another win to its résumé, but the Wildcats also have to keep one eye on the road ahead. Their last four games came against SEC opponents, and their next four, including Saturday's matchup, are conference battles as well. The difference is that the three opponents waiting on the horizon all rank inside the Top 25. Just as important as securing a victory this weekend may be getting off the field healthy. It wouldn't be surprising to see Kentucky's starters heading to the sideline before the final whistle if the Wildcats build a three-score advantage, a scenario that feels more likely than not. Should that happen, Vanderbilt could find opportunities against the reserves, and that's a development far more likely to help the over than the under.
The Wildcats have shown they can put up as much as two-thirds of this total by themselves. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, has proven it can find the end zone two or three times, even against SEC competition. Add that together, add a touch of possible garbage-time scoring, and we likely have the recipe for 52 combined points or more. Kentucky may lead the charge, but the Commodores should have opportunities of their own. Put it all together, and the Commodores and Wildcats have me wild about the over.
