The Wildcats have been on a wild ride, winning their way to a 4-1 record and a spot in the Top 25. Wins have been harder to come by for Michigan State, but the Spartans have shown plenty of fight as well. After opening the season 2-0, they dropped four straight against a daunting stretch of opponents and now sit at 2-4. Four of Michigan State's six games have finished well below the 48.5-point total for this matchup. Interestingly, Northwestern, arguably the stronger defensive team, has seen four of its five games clear that number. When these teams meet on Saturday, however, the matchup projects as a tough, methodical battle that could be decided in the trenches, leading to longer fields, extended drives, and fewer points.
Although the Spartans have lost their last four games, there are some encouraging signs beneath the surface. Despite facing a difficult stretch of opponents, Michigan State held Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Notre Dame to between 27 and 31 points through four quarters in each matchup. Meanwhile, aside from a 29-23 loss to No. 5 Indiana, Northwestern has held its other four opponents to 18 points or fewer, with three of those teams managing no more than two touchdowns. In my opinion, that's a recipe for a classic defensive battle.
Big Ten matchups tend to be hard-fought, blow-for-blow battles, and this one should be no different. Even though Northwestern is ranked No. 25 in the nation and arguably has the more complete team, I expect a slow, defense-oriented game in which field position and clock management take center stage. The final score could creep into the 47-48 point range, but that would still be enough for the under to cash. In my opinion, this is a number worth grabbing before it drops any lower.
