The Miami Hurricanes’ unbeaten run continues after they dismantled the Pitt Panthers last week, 52-23. It was the fourth straight time the ‘Canes have scored at least 41 points – one of those four included a double overtime result – while they’ve won six of their seven games by at least 13 points. Oddly enough, the Tar Heels have won five straight in this series, as well as seven of the last 10. However, they’ve covered in just three of those 10 games, and the last time these programs met was back in 2023. Needless to say, a lot has changed in Chapel Hill and Coral Gables since then.
This is a tough spot for the Tar Heels, who come into this game off an overtime loss against Syracuse after back-to-back physical wins on the road at Pitt and Duke, which were on the heels of games against Notre Dame and Clemson. A bye week was mixed in there, but they’re a month removed from that break and were outgained in all five of the aforementioned contests. By the numbers, the Heels excel in red-zone defense and they're one of the better units in preventing explosive plays, which is key against what can be a very explosive Miami offense. However, I’m expecting some fatigue this week after three games in a row decided by nine combined points among them.
The spot isn’t ideal for Miami either considering the anticipated meeting with Notre Dame looming next week, but I would argue there isn’t as big of a lookahead for the Hurricanes as there potentially is for the Irish considering Miami won last year, made the College Football Playoff and were national runners-up. I would also argue the UNC fatigue situation hinders the argument for a Miami lookahead. Instead, this is just another conference game for the ‘Canes, who play in a league where they own a decent-to-significant talent advantage over pretty much every team that lines up opposite them. If I have to play this one, I’m laying it with Miami.
Miami vs North Carolina prediction: Miami Hurricanes -13.5 (-115) at the time of publishing. Playable to -14.5 (-110).
