If this line says anything, it's that things could get wild when the Wildcats welcome the Scarlet Knights into Chicago’s north side. A total of 58.5 points is a hefty number for almost any football game, especially considering Northwestern has seen just one of its six games finish above that mark. Ironically, that game may provide a blueprint for what we're looking for on Saturday. The Wildcats exploded for 45 points against Ball State while the Cardinals chipped in 14 of their own, pushing the total comfortably over the number. A similar script could unfold here, with Northwestern continuing its recent offensive surge and Rutgers, who has shown recent offensive improvement of their own, contributing just enough scoring to help take this total to 59 or greater.
Big Ten football is often associated with defensive slugfests and low-scoring battles, but that hasn't been the case for Rutgers. Each of the Scarlet Knights' first three conference games has sailed over this number, producing 67 total points against Maryland, 62 versus Indiana, and a staggering 77 against USC. Rutgers' defense has consistently surrendered points, while its offense seems to wake up when the words "Big Ten" appear on the marquee. Northwestern has proven to be a stubborn defense, but the Wildcats have also shown they can capitalize offensively when opportunities arise. If Rutgers forgets to bring a few points with them to Chicagoland, where the weather will be near perfect, I believe Northwestern is more than capable of making up the difference and helping push this game over the total.
#24 Northwestern sits at 5-1, with its only loss coming to last year's champion, Indiana, a game the Wildcats dropped by just six points, 29-23. Rutgers is arguably a step or two below the Hoosiers, and Northwestern will likely cruise to a victory here. However, I foresee the Wildcats having to put up plenty of points to get the job done. This line is as high as it is for a reason, but I don't think oddsmakers have pushed it north far enough. Scores like 38-21, 35-24, or even 45-20 feel well within reach. Either way, I'm expecting plenty of fireworks and gladly backing the over.
Northwestern vs Rutgers prediction: Over 58.5 (-105) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number to -120.
