Appalachian State vs Charlotte Pickswise Expert Predictions
The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Charlotte 49ers will start the season with a fun, neutral-site matchup on Friday night from Bank of America Stadium, the home of the Carolina Panthers, just down the highway from Charlotte’s campus. Both of these teams will be running fresh systems on both sides of the ball, as both head coaches and all of their coordinators are completely new at their respective programs this season. Tim Albin left his post at Ohio University after leading the Bobcats to their first MAC championship since the 1960s, while Dowell Loggains was previously the offensive coordinator at South Carolina and has never been a head coach.
In addition to the overhaul on both staffs, there is ample change throughout the roster, as App State and Charlotte are both outside the top 115 in returning production. In fact, neither team will have more than 43% returning production on either side of the ball. Close to 50 combined transfers will be on the 2-deep of these two rosters. Needless to say, it may take a few drives to a few quarters for these offenses to look somewhat cohesive.
Both of these coaches love to deploy smash-mouth, pro-style offenses that are heavily predicated on the run. That should remain constant on Friday, and the clock should be running for a vast majority of this game because of it. Given the amount of new faces at both programs, in addition to the expectation that this will be a game heavily centered around the run, I like the Under most in this battle of G5 teams from North Carolina.
