Saturday will feature a Big 12 matchup between the Houston Cougars and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Houston is 4-1 but is coming off a conference loss against Texas Tech last weekend. The Cougars fell on their home field 35-11 and failed to cover a spread of +11.5.  Quarterback Zeon Chriss led Houston in passing with 93 yards and also led the team in rushing with 59 yards. Chris replaced Houston starting quarterback Conner Weigman, who left Saturday’s game for concussion protocol. Head coach Willie Fritz said that Weigman is “trending in the right direction” for this Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State is 1-4 and 0-2 in Big 12 Conference games. The Cowboys have lost their last four games and are coming off a 41-13 defeat on the road against Arizona. Oklahoma State failed to cover in this game as 23.5-point underdogs. Quarterback Zane Flores struggled in this game, completing less than 50% of his passes, and only throwing for 47 yards. In total, the Cowboys could only manage to accumulate 158 total yards of offense against Arizona.

This season, Oklahoma State made the tough decision to part ways with long time head coach, Mike Gundy. Gundy had been with Oklahoma State as their head coach for 20 straight seasons, but the Cowboys decided to part ways after another slow start. Replacing Gundy as the interim head coach has been offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, who is still looking for his first win. Included in the sideline turnover, it was also Clint Bowen’s first game as defensive coordinator for Oklahoma State. Despite the large number put on the scoreboard by Arizona, there were some positives for the Cowboys defense. Oklahoma State finished the game with two interceptions, six sacks, five pass breakups, and 11 tackles for loss. All of these were season highs and they came against one of the best offenses in the Big 12. While Houston’s offense has been great averaging around 27 points per game this season, there are still concerns around Weigman and if he will be ready to play. Saturday’s game should be an opportunity to take another step in the right direction for Oklahoma State’s defense.
