LSU vs Ole Miss Pickswise Expert Predictions

LSU Tigers
Point Spread Pick
LSU +1.5(-110)

We have a huge SEC clash on Saturday between two playoff contenders, as the LSU Tigers head to Oxford to face the Ole Miss Rebels. This game has me asking a lot of questions, not the least of which is why Ole Miss is favored in the first place? Lots of people think LSU is the best team in the nation, and they have controlled games against Clemson and Florida already (although neither of these wins is aging well at the moment). Are we really ready to argue that Ole Miss with a backup QB can beat LSU? Do we really think the backup QB is better than the starter (Austin Simmons is likely to miss another week with a gimpy ankle)? And are we really ready to bury LSU because their offense has been far from crisp so far? I am not ready to do any of those things, so I am going with the Tigers in this spot.

The primary objective is figuring out this Rebel offense behind Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss has put up some impressive stats in 2 games, I’ll tip the cap to that. Those games were not against an LSU defense, though. Chambliss is a Division 2 transfer who is very athletic, and Lane Kiffin is putting him in all sorts of designed runs. He definitely can handcuff a defense, but he is going to have to prove it to me in this spot.

As for LSU, they have struggled offensively. Brian Kelly has had sassy press conferences about it, but I think this team has too much talent and will inevitably figure it out. Ole Miss has been really bad against the run, and this would be a great spot for the Tigers to figure out at least that part (which of course would make the passing attack better too). I am definitely hesitant to hammer this spot because it feels like Vegas wants me to do it, but I just have to back the Tigers here.

Game Totals Pick
Under 55.0(-110)

This feels like a really high point total for a game that features an elite defense facing a backup QB on one side, and a struggling offense on the other side. Instead, this feels a lot more like a classic SEC West (yeah, I know that doesn’t exist anymore) defensive slugfest. Take, for example, the two headliner games LSU has already played: a 17-10 win over Clemson, and a 20-10 win over Florida. Sure, the Ole Miss offense is better than both Clemson and Florida’s, but LSU is clearly capable of making a game a low-scoring field position contest.

What game script puts us over the total? It would likely be an early outburst of scoring from the Rebels, one that forces LSU to push the pace as well. On the other hand, I expect Kiffin to limit the risk-taking from his quarterback, and I expect LSU to run the ball against a terrible Rebel rushing defense. That looks to me like a game that grinds on the clock and sees a fair amount of conservative decision-making. I far prefer the under in this game.
