The Virginia Tech Hokies are limping to the finish line in 2025 with no chance to reach a bowl game, looking ahead to the James Franklin era to come in 2026. While historically this matchup has produced fireworks, the underlying numbers suggest otherwise this time around. Virginia Tech has lost by two possessions in three straight contests and faces a touch Virginia squad that thrives on both sides of the ball. The offense gets all the attention, averaging 33.7 points per game, but the defense is no joke.

Virginia ranks top-15 in havoc ranking defensively with a top-35 mark in both turnovers forced and sacks in 2025. Virginia Tech has struggled with turnovers, ranking 110th in turnover margin, and the passing offense has been atrocious altogether. The Hokies rank bottom-10 in FBS in passing success rate, 117th in EPA/dropback and 113th in net points per drive. While the glamour of a rivalry matchup is enticing, the numbers suggest Virginia should handle the Hokies comfortably; I’ll take Virginia to cover at home.
