Dustin Johnson badly needs a confidence boost going into next week’s US Open at Torrey Pines — and the world number one is hoping the inaugural Palmetto Championship will provide that injection.
It is a home-state gig for the South Carolinian, but competing in familiar surroundings did not help Johnson in the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, where he missed the cut. He also suffered a weekend off in the Masters and has been largely out of sorts since winning the Saudi International in the first week of February. Maybe Congaree Golf and Country Club is a venue where DJ can rediscover his sparkle.
The course designer, Tom Fazio, has likened Congaree to another of his creations — Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. Johnson was the course record holder at Shadow Creek until the PGA Tour arrived there for the CJ Cup in October, so there are crumbs of encouragement for his supporters this week
Brooks Koepka, second in the US PGA Championship last time out despite struggling for full fitness in the wake of knee surgery, may appeal to more bettors.
Better value than both the American superstars at the head of the market, though, is arguably Tyrrell Hatton. The Englishman, who crushed Rory McIlroy in a desert duel to win the Abu Dhabi Championship at the end of January, could fall in love with Congaree and go close to claiming a second PGA Tour title.
Hatton finished third in the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek and may serve up a similar performance at Congaree. His recent form has been steady if unspectacular, but 18th place in the Masters was his best ever Augusta performance, and he was thrilled with his Sunday 68 there.
Hatton got married at the end of last month and approaches the Palmetto in a positive mood. The temperamental Buckinghamshire boy should be trusted to star in what is a relatively weak PGA Tour event.
The main American challenger may turn out to be Keith Mitchell, who has been striking his ball with great authority over recent weeks. Mitchell starred in the Zurich Classic pairs event before finishing third in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow — another Fazio-designed layout.
Mitchell’s only PGA Tour victory came in the 2019 Honda Classic on a Fazio course (PGA National), so he will doubtless be looking forward to tackling Congaree. Mitchell loves putting on Bermuda grass greens and gets his favorite dancefloors in South Carolina this week.
First Round Leader Pick
Bettors seeking a prop bet should consider Bryson Nimmer for first-round leader.
The rising star from South Carolina should be less nervous than he was in the RBC Heritage in April. A long pre-tournament media conference, a massive gallery, and the latest possible tee-time created a whirlpool of pressure for Nimmer in the Heritage, and he dumped his opening drive in the water on his way to a round of 80.
A Friday 68 followed, though, as Nimmer showcased his quality, and the talented youngster could start well at Congaree from an 8.50am ET launchpad.

Golf Picks Explained
There are many ways in which you can bet on golf and our golf picks will highlight all of the different types of bets, depending on what our experts see as the best golf picks for that particular tournament. The most common way to wager on golf is to try and pick the outright winner of the tournament. With such a large field size each week, picking the winner can be tough but you can get great odds on those longshot picks if you manage to hit one. The next most common golf pick will be an each-way golf pick. Each-way golf picks are in effect two bets in one, half the money on the win, and half the money on the place, so be aware that your stake will be doubled when placing an each-way bet. There are many other types of golf picks, from individual Player Golf Prop Bets to the First Round Leader and even 3-ball matches each day amongst the groups. Our experts will highlight the best golf picks, all of which come with full analysis ahead of and during the tournament. Check out this week’s golf picks from Wednesday onwards.
