The Cleveland Guardians officially clinched their playoff berth, but they are still only clinging to a one-game lead atop the AL Central, so there’s at least some motivation for the visitors here. The same can’t be said for the Royals, who were eliminated from playoff contention seemingly ages ago, residing in the basement of the division. We’re expecting a matchup that pits Cleveland’s Gavin Williams against Kansas City’s Noah Cameron. Williams is a right-hander that carries a 1.44 September ERA in 25 innings, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits with 40 strikeouts and just eight walks. He hasn’t allowed a home run this month, though this will be his first road start since August 25. For what it’s worth, his road splits are significantly worse than his home splits, 4.79 ERA vs 2.84, but I wouldn’t put too much weight into that – Williams has held this Royals lineup to a .196 average and .275 on-base percentage in 138 career at-bats.
Cameron is a southpaw that carries a 3.52 ERA in September on the heels of a 1.87 in August. After a great rookie season in 2025, Cameron has proven the Royals can build their rotation around him, as he carries a sub-4.00 ERA on the year, striking out 155 batters in 172.1 innings. Unfortunately, the Royals have one of the worst bullpens in the league behind him, one that carries a 5.00 ERA and a league-worst 1.51 WHIP. Cleveland continues to boast one of the best bullpens, sitting top-six in ERA and top-three in home runs allowed.
Cameron was consistently throwing 95+ pitches every outing, but the Royals have tapered his workload in the closing month of the regular season. For good reason, there’s no need to put extra miles on their future ace’s arm in a relatively meaningless game. As such, I would expect him to exit around 85-90 pitches, or even sooner if things go south quickly. The Guards aren’t the strongest against left-handers, but Jose Ramirez and David Fry have had success against Cameron, while Cleveland has been productive as a whole at the plate in high-pressure games over the last week. With Williams on the mound against an uninterested Royals lineup, I could only look to Cleveland here.
