Brendan Beck is being called up to start the opener of the New York Yankees' double-header against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Beck last pitched for the AAA affiliate on September 16, giving the right-hander plenty of rest before this outing. The 27-year-old has made three appearances for New York this season, allowing five walks, four home runs and seven earned runs in his first 7.2 innings of work. In 25 AAA starts his production has been far stronger, pitching to a 2.93 ERA with 151 Ks in 135.2 innings. In the last 30 days against right-handed pitching, the Orioles sit 24th in wOBA with a 91 wRC+. They are striking out nearly 27 percent of the time in that sample, as well.
Trevor Rogers is set to start this game for the Orioles. This will mark the southpaw’s 30th start of his campaign. Through 29 outings. Rogers has posted a 4.07 ERA with a better 3.54 xERA behind it. He was terrific in his last outing against Milwaukee, tossing 8.0 innings of one-run ball with 10 Ks along the way. Rogers faces a Yankees lineup in great form against lefties, however. In the last 30 days, New York sits fifth in wOBA with a 123 wRC+ against southpaw pitching. I favor them in this matchup given current pricing.
