2023 World Baseball Classic best bets for Tuesday, March 14: Dominican Republic is rolling

Dominican Republic left fielder Juan Soto (22) celebrates with shortstop Jeremy Pena (3) and second baseman Wander Franco (5) after hitting a home run during the sixth inning against Nicaragua at LoanDepot Park.

There are just a few days left in pool play at the World Baseball Classic, and every game has become much more important. Tuesday’s WBC slate begins with Nicaragua and Venezuela at 12 pm ET, and they are followed Canada against Colombia at 3 pm ET, Israel versus Dominican Republic at 7:00 pm ET and Great Britain battling Mexico at 10:00 pm ET.

After winning my Canada-USA over 11.5 pick in the 2nd inning yesterday, I’m back with another World Baseball Classic best bet for Tuesday.

Israel vs Dominican Republic predictions World Baseball Classic 2023: Dominican Republic -6.5 (-115)

Yesterday could not have been more different for these teams. The Dominican Republic’s offense woke up by beating Nicaragua 6-1, including home runs from Juan Soto — which still might not have landed — and Manny Machado. But Israel was on the wrong end of history, as Puerto Rico threw a combined perfect game (sort of) in 8 innings. I didn’t think I’d ever say that a team threw a perfect game and won on a walk-off in the 8th inning, but that’s the World Baseball Classic. In its 10-0 defeat to Puerto Rico, Israel struck out in 12 of its 24 at-bats. But the road to advancing will only get more difficult as Israel faces the Dominican Republic today.

The Israelis have turned to a 19-year-old kid for help. Jacob Steinmetz has an impossible task in front of him: limit the Dominican Republic’s offense. This situation feels oddly similar to last night’s Canada vs USA game, as Canada started Mitch Bratt — a 19-year-old who last pitched in Single-A. He was rocked for 6 runs and 3 walks in just 0.1 innings. But unlike Bratt, Steinmetz has yet to reach Single-A. Steinmetz spent the 2022 season in the Arizona Complex League and struggled…a lot. He was 0-7 with a 7.88 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP in 24 innings. In those 2-dozen innings he allowed 20 walks, hit 4 batters and had 11 wild pitches. It’s safe to say that Steinmetz struggles with command, and now he has to face a lineup that starts with Soto, Julio Rodriguez, Machado and Rafael Devers.

The Dominican Republic has yet to announce a starting pitcher, but that doesn’t worry me. Their pitching staff is incredibly deep, and I think we could see Roansy Contreras or Johnny Cueto start today. This line will continue to move in the Dominican’s favor, so catch it while you can.
