Pickswise was nice enough to give me the opportunity to write up my plays for you all. For those of you who don’t know me, they refer to me as JutPicks on Twitter. I post all my plays with brief write-ups every day. Now I get to write even more with no character limit!

I pride myself on being as transparent as they come. My MLB record from last season and this season is listed in my bio. In the regular season, I recorded 249 wins and 158 losses for a gain of +38.75 units. Without further ado, let’s dive into my favorite play for day 1 of the playoffs.

Game 1 of the Wild Card series between the New York Mets and San Diego Padres will feature Max Scherzer and Yu Darvish. The Mets ended their 2022 regular season campaign in disgust. They lost the NL East division to the Atlanta Braves after once having a 10.5-game lead. It was a historic regular season for the Mets as they won 100+ games and will look to make quick work of the San Diego Padres and advance to the NLDS.

Scherzer was brought in for this moment. He signed a 3-year contract in the offseason after going 7-0 for the Dodgers the previous year. The Mets needed a co-star next to Jacob deGrom and got just that. Scherzer had a 2.23 ERA during the regular season including a 1.67 ERA at home. The last time he allowed more than one earned run at home was against this Padres team in July.

The Padres traded for Juan Soto and Josh Bell at the trade deadline to revamp their offense. Since they were acquired, the Padres ranked 17th in average and 13th in wRC against right-handed pitching. Scherzer has dominated Manny Machado, Jurickson Profar and Jake Cronenworth. The three hitters are a combined 10 for 74 against the future Hall-of-Famer.

I expect Scherzer to continue his home dominance as he stayed under this total in 8 of 10 starts at Citi Field. In his career, he’s allowed less than 2 earned runs in 6 of 10 home playoff starts.
