I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. Tonight features 6 games on the ice after our exciting slate last night. There are some spots with teams on the second night of a back-to-back, which can make outcomes more difficult to predict. That’s the case for half of the games on the board, but thankfully there is always the player prop market. We’re actually going to avoid those back-to-back teams and target some skaters who have enjoyed success against their opponents in the past.

Along with our player props, be sure to check out all of our NHL picks for today’s action.

Steven Stamkos over 0.5 assists (+120)

The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to bounce back from what looks like an embarrassing loss on paper. They went down 5-1 to the Minnesota Wild. However, that was their second night of a back-to-back and the Wild are no joke on home ice. Regardless, the Lightning are still one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, and have the veteran leadership to rebound from those types of games. The spearhead of that leadership is Steven Stamkos. Between him, Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman, they’ve helped us cash several player props in the past. The other consideration for this play was on Kucherov to record multiple points, which he just did for us recently.

We’re still going to roll with Stamkos given his dominance against the Winnipeg Jets. Admittedly, the Jets are not generally an ideal opponent for this type of play. However, Stamkos has a career’s worth of history making him matchup-proof. He’s also recorded multiple points in 5 of his last 6 games against the Jets. Similarly, he’s had at least 1 assist in each of his last 6 games against Winnipeg, and in 8 of his last 10. That history is worth nothing, as Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been in net for them for 8 seasons. There’s no denying we’re taking a slight risk with how much Stamkos also likes to shoot the puck, but with how well Brayden Point is finding the back of the net recently, we’ll still stick with the assist play.

Tomas Hertl over 0.5 assists (-110)

We’re sticking with the same prop market but heading out west for this one. The San Jose Sharks are taking on the Anaheim Ducks, which in itself is already enough to back this play. At 4 goals per game, the Ducks are allowing the most in the league. This is also the 4th meeting between these teams this season, and the first 3 saw plenty of goals. Those matchups ended with 11, 9 and 7 total goals, and Hertl was a part of several of them. Not only did he record multiple points in each of them, he recorded multiple assists in all 3 games. Even dating back to last season, he’s had 2 assists in 4 of his last 5 games against the Ducks, and we just need 1 tonight.

The other consideration for our second play was teammate Timo Meier to record multiple points for us (again). However, with such a great price on this prop, it’s worth only needing 1 assist from Hertl. He’ll likely be sending one over to Meier, but there’s also the options of Erik Karlsson (53 points in 39 games) and Logan Couture. It’s also worth noting that the Ducks have committed the 2nd-most penalties in the NHL this season and have the 3rd-worst penalty kill. Whether it’s on even strength or the man advantage, look for Hertl to continue his success against his Pacific Division rival.
