I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. As the NHL season winds down, it begins to become more clear which skaters may be on their way to winning specific awards. However, not all of them look as guaranteed as Connor McDavid is of finishing with the most points. There are still plenty of superstars out to pad their stats as they help their teams towards the postseason. While there’s likely to be plenty of goals in the Sabres vs Maple Leafs game, we’ve found more value with another skater in an advantageous matchup.

Cale Makar over 0.5 assists (-145)

The Colorado Avalanche have some household names in Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen but that’s not to say Cale Makar hasn’t already become one for many fans even though he’s still a young, rising star. He won the Norris Trophy for the league’s best defenseman last season and set a franchise record for the most points in a season by a D-man. He has missed some games in the concussion protocol this season, but he has still racked up 52 points through 51 games, with 37 being assists.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise when he’s skating alongside a volume shot-taker such as MacKinnon and a great goalscorer in his own right with Rantanen. The 24-year-old has only 4 career games against the Montreal Canadiens, the Avs’ opponents tonight, but he’s recorded a point in 3 of them. The most recent was in December, when Makar had an assist. He also finished January with at least an assist in all but 3 of his games and has 5 assists through 5 games in March. With Makar and company facing a Canadiens team allowing over 3.5 goals per game and having the 4th-worst penalty-kill percentage, we expect Makar to link up with MacKinnon or Rantanen for a goal tonight.
