I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. We’ve had increasingly more games since the first puck drop of the NHL season in the United States on Tuesday and tonight provides a full 10-game slate. That means plenty of opportunities to target the player prop markets. It’s still early in the season, so it can be difficult to read who teams are going to be. Therefore, that can make it more difficult to predict who is going to win games. By targeting player props, we can still profit without worrying who wins or loses the game.

Along with our player props, be sure to check out all of our NHL picks for today’s action.

Let’s take a closer look at my favorite player props today.

Sidney Crosby over 1.5 points (+150)

There were plenty of offseason moves, but we’re going to target one of the tried and true skaters who stayed home. Sidney Crosby was extremely profitable for us last season so it’s only fitting that we’re targeting him tonight. The Penguins did right by their captain this summer by re-signing both Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin.

The trio has been together for what feels like an eternity and they work beautifully together. Along with Jake Guentzel, there are several elite skaters surrounding Crosby to help him hit this prop. He was the Pens’ best skater against the Coyotes last season, recording 5 points in just 2 games against them. Many teams were successful against Arizona last season, as they allowed the most shots per game and 3rd-most goals per game. That type of volume is perfect for Crosby and company. He can easily record an assist with the amount of shots taken by Guentzel and even score himself with an apple from Letang. No matter how he gets it done, trust the perennial all-star Sid the Kid tonight on home ice.

Claude Giroux over 0.5 assists (+140)

Now it’s time to switch gears to an old face in a new place. Claude Giroux began last season as the Flyers captain and ended it with the Florida Panthers. He left Philly and helped the high-flying Panthers win the Presidents’ Trophy for the league’s best record. He made the conscious decision to join the Senators this summer and Ottawa looks to be ready to turn things around.

Giroux had 20 assists in just 18 games with the Panthers last season and should help out the Sens just as much. First and foremost, we’re targeting his assist prop specifically as that is the vast majority of his points. During his time with Florida, he had just 3 goals in comparison to those 20 assists. This play is also about who is around him. The Sens also brought in Alex DeBrincat from the Chicago Blackhawks this offseason. He’s a volume shot-taker who had 270 last season and 41 goals. That’s within the top 15 of the NHL in both categories. Similarly, the Sens have always had one of the highest volume shot-takers in Brady Tkachuk. He took a whopping 288 shots last season, the 10th-most in the league. With so many skaters around Giroux who take their snipes and can score, expect him to be on the helping end of one of those goals.
