Beyond the four major sports, I am an avid tennis fan and cover the ATP Tour on a daily basis. The summer-hard court swing heats up in a major way this week, as the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. features both men and women and offers 500 ranking points to the champions. It’s safe to say that the stakes are high not only because of this particular tournament’s importance, but also because players want to fine-tune their games in advance of the season’s fourth and final Grand Slam – the U.S. Open. Among the players in action in the United States capital are Taylor Fritz, Andy Murray, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.

Here are the odds and my picks for this week’s festivities in Washington, D.C.

Taylor Fritz +650
Frances Tiafoe +900
Sebastian Korda +900
Hubert Hurkacz +1000
Felix Auger-Aliassime +1000
Alexander Bublik +1400
Chris Eubanks +1600
Grigor Dimitrov +1600
J.J. Wolf +1800
Ugo Humbert +2000
Andy Murray +2100
Brandon Nakashima +2200

3-star value play: Grigor Dimitrov (+1600)

The Citi Open should set up well for Dimitrov, who has a favorable draw and is also playing great tennis at the moment. The 33-year-old Bulgarian is in a weaker bottom half of the bracket away from Fritz (the top seed), Murray and Hubert Hurkacz. Dimitrov’s recent results are as follows: runner-up in Geneva, fourth round at the French Open, quarterfinals at Queen’s Club and fourth round at Wimbledon. The world #20 generally plays his best tennis on hard courts in the United States and I think he will be up to those usual tricks this week.

2-star value play: Frances Tiafoe (+900)

Tiafoe isn’t just an American playing at home in the United States; he is from the D.C. area. No one will have more crowd support this week than Tiafoe, who is already a fan favorite pretty much regardless of the setting. A semifinalist at the 2022 U.S. Open, Tiafoe generally does his best work on American hard courts. His grass-court summer included a title in Stuttgart and there is no reason why he can’t lift yet another ATP trophy.

1-star value play: Andy Murray (+2100)

Murray is certainly worth a sprinkle at +2100 odds. The 3-time Grand Slam champion is right near Fritz in the bracket, but Fritz admitted following his triumph in Atlanta that he is not entirely 100 percent from a physical standpoint. Fatigue could be a factor, and Murray can take advantage. The Scot captured 2 Challenger titles on grass this summer, so even though he lost early at Wimbledon to Stefanos Tsitsipas, his confidence level should still be high.

WTA Washington, D.C. odds

Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook

Jessica Pegula +333
Coco Gauff +450
Maria Sakkari +850
Madison Keys +1000
Daria Kasatkina +1100
Caroline Garcia +1400
Liudmila Samsonova +1600
Belinda Bencic +1600
Qinwen Zheng +1800
Elina Svitolina +2500
Victoria Azarenka +2500
Sloane Stephens +2800
Bianca Andreescu +2800

3-star value play: Madison Keys (+1000)

Keys is coming off a quarterfinal showing at Wimbledon, so she is playing well and high on confidence. That isn’t always the case for a player that is admittedly inconsistent, but when Keys is confident she is dangerous. She is also a trendy pick in the outright market because of her all-or-nothing nature. The former U.S. Open runner-up can lose in the first round of any tournament, but she can also just as easily go all the way. Quick conditions on these Washington, D.C. hard courts and in the summer heat are perfect for Keys’ game. She also has a good draw this week, so a title would not be at all surprising.

2-star value play: Belinda Bencic (+1600)

Bencic’s most recent appearance in the United States resulted in a runner-up performance in Charleston and she is coming off a fourth-round effort at Wimbledon. The reigning Olympic gold medalist is in a relatively soft section of the Washington, D.C. that is headlined by Gauff, who is not playing particularly well at the moment. This is a good opportunity for Bencic.

1-star value play: Caroline Garcia (+1400)

I’m not quite as high on Garcia as I am on the first 2 WTA selections, but when you can get the #2 seed at +1400 odds it’s a chance that should not be entirely passed up. Garcia has won multiple matches at 3 consecutive events and both her final appearances this season have come on outdoor hard courts.
