Brock Purdy was Mr Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft (the very last pick) and he began the season as the San Francisco 49ers’ 3rd-string quarterback. Against all probability, Purdy suddenly finds himself starting the NFC Championship game, in which San Francisco will go up against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

With Purdy and the 49ers just 2 wins away from the Lombardi Trophy, it’s time to revisit the Super Bowl history of young quarterbacks.

Has a rookie quarterback ever won the Super Bowl?

There have been 56 installments of the Super Bowl. Not once has a rookie quarterback won it. While that may be surprising given the number of Super Bowls that have been played over the years, it does make sense. Firstly, not many rookie QBs start right away for their NFL teams. And secondly, the ones who do start are generally high draft picks selected by the worst teams in the league.

Has a rookie QB ever been in the Super Bowl?

Not only has a rookie QB never won the Super Bowl, but also no rookie QB has even started a Super Bowl. Six have reached a conference championship game, making Brock Purdy the seventh. All six, however, lost with a Super Bowl berth at stake (Pat Haden of the Rams, Dieter Brock of the Rams, Shaun King of the Buccaneers, Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers, Joe Flacco of the Ravens and Mark Sanchez of the Jets). Kordell Stewart took some direct snaps at QB for Pittsburgh as a rookie in Super Bowl XXX, but Neil O’Donnell was the Steelers’ starter in a 27-17 loss to the Cowboys.

Can Brock Purdy be the first rookie QB to make the Super Bowl?

Brock Purdy has a decent chance to be the first rookie starting QB to lead his team to the Super Bowl, but he is not favored to do so per the oddsmakers. Purdy and the 49ers are +125 on the money line in Sunday’s NFC Championship against the Eagles. Against the spread the Niners are +2.5, while the Eagles are -2.5 favorites. Has a 2nd year QB ever won the Super Bowl?

Yes, 4 starting quarterbacks have won the Super Bowl in their second year. Kurt Warner accomplished the feat at the end of the 1999 season and he was followed by Tom Brady (2001), Ben Roethlisberger (2005) and Russell Wilson (2013). Three other second-year QBs have played in the Super Bowl and lost: Dan Marino (1984), Colin Kaepernick (2013) and Joe Burrow (2021).

Who was the youngest quarterback to win A Super Bowl?

Ben Roethlisbeger is the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, having done so at 23 years and 340 days old when the Steelers defeated the Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL. Dan Marino was the youngest quarterback to start in a Super Bowl. Marino was 23 years and 127 days old in Super Bowl XIX, which the Dolphins lost to the 49ers, 38-16.

NFL QBs who won the Super Bowl in their first year as a starter

Both Kurt Warner and Tom Brady won the Super Bowl in their first year as a starter. Warner led the Rams to a dramatic 23-16 victory over the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV. It was his second year in the NFL after spending his rookie campaign in 1998 behind Tony Banks and Steve Bono on the depth chart. Interestingly enough, Warner was the opposing quarterback when the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVI in Brady’s second season. Brady spent his rookie year (2000) backing up Drew Bledsoe.
