KBO picks and predictions

Thursday’s slate features plenty of opportunities for value. Let’s dive into the day’s best bets.

LG Twins ML (-182) vs Samsung Lions

The Samsung Lions were crushed on Wednesday morning, losing 7-0 to the LG Twins. The Lions are now 8-14 on the season and continue to sit in 8th place in the league standings. Their struggles look likely to continue on Thursday, as they will start Baek Jung-Hyun. He is 0-2 on the season and has an ERA of 8.00. In 3 starts this season, Jung-Hyun has struggled mightily, allowing 16 earned runs over 18.0 innings.

With the win on Wednesday, the Twins are now 13-9 on the season. They continue to sit in 3rd place in the standings, still just 0.5 games behind the Doosan Bears. The Twins look to be in a good spot for Thursday as well, as they will start Casey Kelly. He is 3-0 on the season and has an ERA of 2.65. In 3 starts this season, Kelly has allowed 5 earned runs over 17.0 innings. His last 2 starts were much better than his first start, allowing a total of 2 earned runs in 12.0 innings during this stretch.

The Lions have been struggling to find much offense recently and a game against Kelly should only frustrate them more. For that reason, backing the team with the better starting pitcher will be the clear play.

Kiwoom Heroes vs Hanwha Eagles +1.5 (-160)

The Hanwha Eagles went back to their losing ways on Wednesday, losing to the Kiwoom Heroes by a score of 7-0. The Eagles are now 8-14 on the season, and are sitting in 8th place in the standings. The Eagles are in a decent spot-on Thursday though, as they are expected to start Jang Min-Je. He has not recorded a decision this season, but has an ERA of 1.04. In 7 appearances (1 start), Min-Je has allowed 1 earned run in 7.2 innings. This will only be his 2nd start of the season, but he did well in his first start, pitching 4.0 innings against the SSG Landers without allowing a run.

With the win on Wednesday, the Heroes are now 12-10 on the season and are in 5th place in the league standings. They will counter with Tyler Eppler on Thursday, who is 1-1 on the season and has an ERA of 4.22. In 4 starts this season, Eppler has allowed 10 earned runs in 21.1 innings. His most recent start was his worst of the season, allowing 4 earned runs to the SSG Landers over 5.0 innings.

The Eagles have clearly had their struggles, but this is a game where they actually look to have the edge in starting pitching. For that reason, backing the Eagles on the run line is worth a play.

SSG Landers vs Lotte Giants ML (-118)

We saw the first tie on the season on Wednesday morning as the game between the SSG Landers and the Lotte Giants ended 1-1 after 12 innings. With the tie, the SSG Landers are now 17-4-1 on the season and still hold a 4-game lead over 2nd place. They are scheduled to start Noh Kyung-Eun on Thursday, who is 3-1 on the season with an ERA of 1.29. In 4 starts this season, Kyung-Eun has allowed 3 earned runs in 21.0 innings. Even in his only loss of the season, he allowed just 1 run over 5.0 innings against the Hanwha Eagles.

With the tie-on Wednesday, the Giants are now 11-9-1 on the season. They are currently in 4th place in the league standings, trailing 3rd place by 1 game. The Giants look to be in a great spot-on Thursday, as they will be scheduled to start Charlie Barnes. He is 4-0 on the season and has an ERA 0f 0.54. In 5 starts this season, Barnes has allowed 2 earned runs in 28.1 innings. His last 3 starts have basically been perfect, allowing 0 runs over his last 20.2 innings.

Both teams have starters who have had a ton of success this season. However, the Giants still have the advantage with Barnes on the mound, so backing them to win will be the play.
