Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. Saturdays are nearly always the most jam-packed day in the NHL, and today is no different. It’s been exactly a week since the All-Star games, and now we have 14 games on the board. There are some teams playing their 3rd game since the break, while others have yet to touch the ice. Not only are there 14 matchups, but half of them start in the afternoon. New York Islanders 3-way ML (-130) over Montreal Canadiens

The NBA has taken the sports world by storm with its trade deadline this week. In the NHL world, the Islanders were the closest we had to that. They acquired former Canucks captain Bo Horvat. It’s clear he wants to be in the Big Apple, as he immediately signed an 8-year extension. That should help the Islanders to take care of business against the Canadiens today. Frankly, he shouldn’t even be needed.

Montreal is sitting in last place in the Atlantic Division and is the 2nd-worst team in the Eastern Conference. This is the perfect bounce-back spot for the Isles after losing to Horvat’s former team, the Canucks. However, just prior to that was an impressive shutout win over the Seattle Kraken, who had been the highest-scoring team on the road. The Canadiens also haven’t played yet in February. Needing to shake off rust coupled with an injured Cole Caufield should have the Islanders taking care of business.

Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (+170) over Ottawa Senators

We’re headed to another one of the early afternoon games in Canada. The similarities continue, as this will be the Senators’ first game since the All-Star break. Meanwhile, the Oilers are greased up and ready to go after 2 games already this week. They’re coming off a loss like the Islanders, but also crushed in their first game out of the break with a 5-2 road win. That helped them maintain their rank as the highest-scoring team since the start of 2023.

Edmonton is also the 3rd-highest scoring team on the road, which should continue to increase with a healthy Evander Kane skating with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Not only will the Sens likely be a bit rusty, but they also haven’t faced much competition even before their nearly 2 weeks off. Each of their last 2 games were against the Canadiens, and the game prior was against a struggling Detroit Red Wings squad. Therefore, we’ll back the team with the greater superstar talent in this Canadian battle.

Minnesota Wild 3-way ML (+135) over New Jersey Devils

It’s not another early puck drop, but there are more similarities. We are once again fading a team that will be without their star player. The Devils got the unfortunate news that Jack Hughes will be out at least a couple of weeks with an upper body injury. The 21-year-old is the clear leader of the team and the primary factor for their surprisingly great season. His absence will be a massive blow against a strong Wild team.

We’re getting a much better value on Minnesota given the circumstances due to their recent performances. They have not impressed in their first 2 games after the All-Star break. However, like we mentioned with other teams, there is sometimes a shaking-off-the-rust process. The Wild still have their star youngster as well in Kirill Kaprizov. There’s no doubt that the Devils are a stronger team than anyone would have guessed, but Minnesota is still working their way up the Central Division and are tied with the Colorado Avalanche. This one will likely be a sweat, but we’re backing Kaprizov and company on home ice.
