I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. We’ve been able to find value in just 3-game slates, so a huge Saturday set of games provides plenty of opportunities. However, it can also feel overwhelming to break it all down. Thankfully, that’s what we’re here for. We’ve targeted the best spots to piece together a parlay for a mega payout that could fund several bets for the season ahead. Before we dive in, be sure to check out our NHL picks for today’s action.

Senators -1.5 (+110) over Coyotes

The Senators are coming off of back-to-back home wins, and they’ll be in Ottawa today as well. They made several additions this summer, which finally seemed to click after losing their first 2 games on the road. The first of their recent wins was an impressive one over the Boston Bruins and their most recent showed some real mental toughness. After falling behind 2-0 to the Washington Capitals, they went on to dominate that game and win by a final score of 5-2.

Those are 2 playoff teams from last season, so the Coyotes should be a breeze. Arizona was the absolute worst team in the Western Conference last season, including the Seattle Kraken in their inaugural season. The only team just slightly worse in the NHL was the Montreal Canadiens, who just smashed the Coyotes 6-2 on Thursday night. That’s the same score they lost by to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins took them down 6-3. For some reason, Arizona can give the Toronto Maple Leafs fits, but no one else. Regardless, they’re just an awful team and the Sens can prove that they can make a playoff push this season with a big win today.

Penguins vs Blue Jackets Over 6.5 (-125)

Rather than targeting a side in this matchup, we’re focusing on the total instead. Outside of an inexplicable loss to the Montreal Canadiens, the Penguins have been lighting up the scoreboard. That loss was also their only road game this season, and they’ll be back in Pittsburgh for this game. The Pens have scored 6 goals in all 3 of their home games this season, and they were against 2 of the best defensive teams in the NHL last season. Admittedly, the Los Angeles Kings don’t seem to be that same team anymore, but scoring 6 goals on the Tampa Bay Lightning is certainly impressive.

Similarly, the Blue Jackets have put their biggest addition on display early and often this season. Former-Flame Johnny Gaudreau just scored 2 goals in Columbus’ most recent game, which was a 5-3 win over the Nashville Predators. They have an elite goaltender in Juuse Saros, making it all the more impressive. Better yet, the Jackets have gone over the total in each of their last 4 games, which also included a game against the Lightning. They’ve done their fair share of both scoring and allowing goals, so we prefer the total rather than a side for this matchup.

Predators -1.5 (+125) over Flyers

As shocking as it may sound, the Flyers are coming off of their first loss of the season. That was their first road game of the year, and this will mark their second. Nashville is already a tough place to play, and the Predators are looking to bounce back from their recent loss. It’s difficult to imagine anything but a convincing Preds win in this matchup, given the Flyers roster is primarily the same as it was last season.

In fact, they’re without former-captain Claude Giroux. They still have goaltender Carter Hart, which isn’t promising for a team that allowed the 6th-most goals per game last season. Meanwhile, the Preds still have their core trio of Filip Forsberg, Matt Duchene and Roman Josi. The 3 of them combined for 266 points last season, despite missing 19 games between them. For perspective, the Flyers top 3 skaters last season recorded just 144 points. Nashville is also in a better spot now that goaltender Juuse Saros is healthy. He entered the season as the 3rd-betting favorite to win the Vezina Trophy of the NHL’s best goalie. Everything looks set for Philly to fly rather low in Smashville on Saturday.
