I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. With NFL Week 7 fully in the rearview mirror, it’s time for the NHL to take over with a full 10-game slate. We’ve got teams on back-to-backs and others very far from home. We’re finally starting to get a feel for who teams are going to be this season, and we’ve targeted our best plays for tonight’s slate. By piecing together just 3 of them for a parlay, we can have quite a mega payout.

Before we dive in, be sure to check out our NHL picks for today’s action.

Detroit Red Wings 3-way ML over New Jersey Devils (+130)

The Red Wings have already cashed 2 best bets for us this season, including their recent 5-1 domination over the Anaheim Ducks. It’s surprising to see them not listed as heavier favorites tonight given the situation. Detroit has already taken down the Devils this year, and that was on the road. They were able to do so in a convincing 5-2 fashion as well. It was the Wings on the second night of a back-to-back in that win, and now it will be New Jersey heading into Detroit in the same situation.

It’s clear that Detroit’s new-look roster is already working together perfectly and former St. Louis Blues goaltender Vile Husso has been a stud in net. Not only has Detroit already crushed the Devils on the road this season, but they also did the same against them last year. The Wings weren’t nearly as strong as they are now, and they still defeated New Jersey 3 times last season and all of them came by multiple goals. While Detroit bolstered their roster in the offseason, the Devils are much the same. That’s bad news for a team that allowed the 4th-most goals in the NHL and will now have a backup goalie between the pipes.

Arizona Coyotes vs Columbus Blue Jackets – Over 6.5 (-130)

Let’s transition into a different type of play and just root for goals rather than a side. There’s no doubt that the Blue Jackets should win this game at home, but the Coyotes can be a frustrating team. They’re terrible, yet they’ve already upset the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road this season. Arizona upset Toronto twice last season as well, so they’ve proven they can at least find the back of the net. That should be true in Columbus tonight, as the Jackets allowed the 5th-most goals per game in the league last season. They still have the same goaltender, Elvis Merzlikins, in net as well.

Similarly, the Coyotes allowed the 3rd-most goals per game in the NHL last year, and they’ve allowed at least 5 goals in every game but 1 so far this season. Each of those games finished over the total with Arizona contributing either 2 or 3 goals. The Jackets can certainly take advantage of the Coyotes’ poor goaltending, as they just scored 5 goals against the New York Rangers the last time they were on the ice. They have last year’s top goaltender Igor Shesterkin in net, so Arizona should be in for a long night tonight.

Calgary Flames 3-way ML over Pittsburgh Penguins (+100)

We’re going to wrap things up with another matchup that features a team on the second night of a back-to-back. Not only is that the case for the Penguins, they’re on the road for both matchups. After having to face Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers last night, they now have to deal with the Calgary Flames. It was the Oilers and Flames who played each other in the second round of the playoffs last season, so these are 2 of the best teams in the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh decided to put starting goaltender Tristan Jarry in net to deal with McDavid last night, so he won’t be available for this matchup. The Flames are a team that can take advantage of a backup goalie, and they’re coming off a big win against the Carolina Hurricanes. They’ve also beaten the Oilers already this season, and had no issues with the Penguins last season. Calgary took care of Pittsburgh in both of their meetings last year, winning by a combined score of 6-1. That doesn’t bode well for a Pens team who can be shaky on the road. They lost to the lowly Montreal Canadiens team in their first road game of the season, so the Flames should move to 5-1-0 tonight.
