Even the most casual hockey fans may have heard of the NHL Winter Classic, which takes place this afternoon. If you haven’t, it’s one of the most exciting games of the season, which takes place once a year at an outdoor venue. After last year’s Central Division rivalry between the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild, we have another incredible contest tonight. This season’s NHL Winter Classic takes place at Fenway Park in Boston, with the Bruins hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins. These two black and yellow teams hate each other, and they are also two of the best teams in hockey right now. That sets up for a great matchup, so we’ve broken it down exclusively for you. Along with our NHL Winter Classic Same Game Parlay, be sure to check out all of our NHL picks for today’s action.

Pittsburgh Penguins +1.5 (-175) over Boston Bruins

The very first leg of our SGP may come as a surprise given how great the Bruins have been this season. However, it’s not as if the Pens can’t keep this game competitive. They’ll be going for their 20th win and anytime we have a rivalry game like this, they can be much more of a toss-up than the odds would suggest.

There’s even more value on Pittsburgh’s money line for a straight play, but we have some wiggle room given we’re piecing together multiple plays. Regardless, these teams have met already this season, in what was a 6-5 Bruins win. Not only did the Pens cover the puck line in that matchup, they very much could have won that game. They entered the 3rd period with a 5-2 win before their collapse. That certainly speaks to a strong-minded Boston squad, but the Pens can keep this hyped game close.

Over 5.5 total goals (-140)

Again, we have some wiggle room to work with, hence taking the alternate line at 5.5 goals. While the total is listed as 6 goals, it’s also as high as 6.5 on some sportsbooks. We already mentioned the previous meeting between these teams, which finished with 11 total goals. This one may not reach double-digits, but we should certainly see 3 goals for both sides. Playing outdoors is what causes hesitation with high-scoring games with the NHL Winter Classic. However, let’s just take a look at last seasons’ matchup.

That was at Target Field in Minnesota with a temperature of -5.7 degrees Fahrenheit. That was the coldest game in NHL history, and there were still 10 goals scored. The pushback here would be the Bruins’ goaltending, but the Pens have the talent to still find the back of the net a few times. Also, Pens defenseman Kris Letang has already been ruled out tonight. That should help David Pastrnak and the Bru-crew to also net a few goals.

Jake Guentzel over 0.5 goals (+160)

Just like the Bruins have Pastrnak, the Penguins have a sniper of their own. While Sidney Crosby is surprisingly leading the team in goals, Guentzel is not far behind with his 15. He’s also usually the highest-volume shooter and although that hasn’t been the case so far this season, he’s still very efficient.

Guentzel was also the one who was the most dominant against the Bruins last season, with 5 points across their 3 meetings, with 3 of them being goals. Let’s also not forget that Crosby has the 19th-most assists in NHL history to go along with veteran Evgeni Malkin alongside. In other words, Guentzel is surrounded by elite passers to help him find the back of the net. In a game where we expect both teams to need to shoot early and often to keep up, we’re backing Guentzel to net one of the Pens.
