The Seattle Seahawks were seemingly in transition last year, with Russell Wilson having been shipped off to Denver and replaced under center by Geno Smith. However, they certainly weren’t entirely in rebuilding mode. In fact, the Seahawks actually got better – and to say that they were better than Wilson’s Broncos would be a gross understatement. Still, despite having made the playoffs in 9 of the last 11 years they haven’t won a playoff game since 2019. Head coach Pete Carroll’s team obviously wants to take that next step sooner rather than later. Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to be made on the Seattle Seahawks this year.

Seattle Seahawks 2022 season recap

Expectations were low for Seattle heading into the 2022 campaign. Wilson left, Smith was unproven and the talent around the new starting quarterback was unspectacular. Nonetheless, the former second-round pick of the Jets (2013) performed better than pretty much anyone could have anticipated and helped his team compile a winning record – and with it a wild-card spot in the playoffs. The Seahawks lost right away to the 49ers via a 41-23 decision, but overall it had to be considered a successful season. Smith was the main bright spot with more than 4,200 passing yards in addition to 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He got a 3-year contract extension this past offseason as a reward.

Seattle Seahawks 2023 NFL season predictions

My assumption is that predictions will vary wildly when it comes to this squad. Arguments can very easily be made on both sides of the spectrum. On one hand, the Seahawks made the playoffs in 2022 and added 2 first-round draft picks – 1 on each side of the ball (cornerback Devon Witherspoon and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba). On the other hand, Smith’s sample size of success is small with only 1 winning season as a starting quarterback. Seattle did well to win its final 2 games to secure a postseason spot, but at the same time it lost 5 of its last 8 contests. What gives in 2023?

Here are a couple of my predictions for the Seattle Seahawks this year.

Best bet: Seattle Seahawks to miss the playoffs (+100)

Unless Witherspoon and Smith-Njigba make major impacts right off the bat, Carroll’s crew will look largely the same as it did last season. That was good enough to just barely snag a wild-card spot in 2022, but will it do the same this time around? I’m not so sure. If the Seahawks are nothing more than mediocre, then schedule may be too tough. In the first half of the 2023 campaign, their 4 road games come against 3 playoff teams and 1 team expected to make the playoffs this season (Detroit). In the second half, they play at San Francisco, at Dallas and at Tennessee while also hosting both San Francisco and Philadelphia. If Seattle slips up in just a couple of home games that it shouldn’t lose, it could be too much to overcome.

Seattle Seahawks season record predictions: 8-9

I obviously want to correlate this with my pick of Seattle missing the playoffs. A record of 9-8 may keep the Seahawks out, but it didn’t last year. I think an 8-9 result has the same likelihood for this squad, and it has better value at +600 on the exact-wins betting market. Let’s roll with the ‘Hawks finishing under .500.
