The 2022 soccer World Cup gets underway on Sunday, November 20, and Group G features tournament favorites Brazil. The South American nation last won the World Cup in 2002 but has been in great form recently and looks set for great things. Alongside them in Group G are Switzerland, Serbia and Cameroon. Can one of those 3 cause problems for Brazil, or will they coast through the group? Our soccer expert is breaking down each team and giving their best bet for Group G.

Brazil 2022 World Cup Group G prediction

Brazil, the top-ranked team in the world, are favorites to lift a 6th World Cup after a run of 16 games without defeat since losing 1-0 to Argentina in the Copa America final last year.

The Samba Boys, who have failed to get past the quarterfinal stage at a World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2002, possess attacking riches to burn with Neymar, Richarlison and Raphina netting 15 goals between them in 8 straight wins.

Portugal is a possible second-round opponent if things go wrong, but Tite’s side should justify their short odds to win the group and the semifinals should be their minimum expectation.

Serbia 2022 World Cup Group G prediction

Serbia faces the tough assignment of opening up against Brazil, while they have also not reached the knockout stages of a World Cup since competing as an independent country.

Dragan Stojkovic’s side qualified ahead of Portugal, going through their group unbeaten thanks to six wins and two draws, and they have just been promoted in the Nations League in a group containing Norway, Slovenia and Sweden.

They have in fact lost just 1 of their last 16 competitive matches and possess Aleksandar Mitrovic in their armory, which might give them the edge as they aim for 2nd place ahead of Switzerland — but the 2nd round looks to be their limit.

Switzerland 2022 World Cup Group G prediction

Switzerland, the 2nd-highest ranked team in the group, reached the first knockout round before being eliminated in 3 of their last 4 World Cups.

They head to Qatar on the back of a middling Nations League campaign, where they suffered 3 defeats and picked up 3 wins.

Murat Yakin’s side did top a qualification group that included Italy, but they have only kept 1 clean sheet in their last 8, highlighting some serious defensive concerns.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Monaco striker Breel Embolo are probably the trump cards in a squad that looks short of depth should they be hit by injuries or suspension.

Cameroon 2022 World Cup Group G prediction

The rank outsiders in the group, Cameroon, lack the stars of old such as Samuel Eto’o or Geremi, and has failed to even win a game in 5 of their previous 7 World Cup campaigns.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana, who plays his club football for Inter Milan, can expect to be busy behind a defense that has kept just 4 clean sheets in 14 games in 2022.

They did finish 3rd at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, losing on penalties to Egypt in the semis, but a lot seems to be resting on the shoulders of striker Vincent Aboubakar, whose best days are now behind him.

2022 Soccer World Cup Group G Best Bet: Brazil and Serbia to qualify (+155)

There is little value in backing Brazil to top of the group, but on the back of Serbia’s strong Nations League form, they could be the team to join Brazil in the knockout stages.
