The Texas A&M Aggies were the only team to beat Alabama during the 2021 regular season and will look to build on that going into 2022. With head coach Jimbo Fisher going into his fifth season in College Station, the Aggies hope to spoil the Crimson Tide’s season by winning the SEC West.

Texas A&M Aggies 2021 season recap

The Aggies finished the 2021 season third in the SEC West. They started the year 4-2, including a stunning 41-38 win over Alabama at home after back-to-back losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State. They went on to win the next 3 games before losing back-to-back conference games to end the year. They backed out of the Gator Bowl due to COVID-19 restrictions, so the Aggies finished the season with a record of 8-4. Zach Calzada led the offense for most of the season, as starting quarterback Haynes King fractured his leg in the second game. Despite a great game against Alabama, Calzada threw for just 2185 yards and 17 touchdowns with a 56.3% completion percentage and 9 interceptions over 12 games. Isaiah Spiller was asked to take pressure off Calzada and did so quite well, accumulating 1200 total yards and 7 touchdowns. Defensively, the Aggies were strong. They held FBS opponents to 17.1 points per game, which ranked 4th out of 130 college football teams.

Texas A&M Aggies 2022 college football season predictions

King returns to College Station after his leg injury last season, but there is no guarantee for him to be the starting quarterback this year. LSU transfer Max Johnson is in the mix along with 5-star freshman Conner Weigman. Spiller is now with the Los Angeles Chargers, but the Aggies will have a good running back in Devon Achane — who accumulated 1171 total yards and 10 total touchdowns last season behind Spiller. Texas A&M will also have a good group of wide receivers with Ainias Smith and Moose Muhammed returning in addition to a pair of 5-star freshmen in Evan Stewart and Chris Marshall. With consistency at the quarterback position and improvement from the offensive line, the Aggies should have a top 40 offense after finishing last season 63rd. On the other side of the ball, D.J. Durkin is the new defensive coordinator in College Station to lead a talented unit. The Aggies return 6 of their 10 top producers and Myles Jones, who missed a majority of the 2021 season due to injury. With quite a bit of freshmen listed as backups, Texas A&M could have depth issues if injuries arise. However, on paper this defense has enough talent to be a top 25 unit once again despite a challenging schedule.

Best Bet: Texas A&M Aggies under 8.5 regular season wins (+130)

The Aggies are loaded with talent, but depth and scheduling could be an issue this year. Texas A&M will play difficult non-conference games against Appalachian State and Miami before entering conference play with 4 straight games away from home. The Aggies will face Arkansas on a neutral field and then travel to Mississippi State, Alabama and then South Carolina following a bye week. Games against Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, and UMass are winnable, before the Aggies end the regular season with LSU at home. If you take a look at Texas A&M’s conference win total, under 5.5 is juiced to -185 but the regular season win total offers plus money for under 8.5. What this tells me is that oddsmakers expect the Aggies to win all 4 non-conference games and lose 3 SEC games. Miami and App State will be tough tests for the defense early in the season despite those games being played at Kyle Field, so it is absolutely possible for the Aggies to lose one of those games. There’s enough value on this line to take a chance on the under.
