Three weeks ago it seemed like the Carolina Panthers were obviously a program on the rise. Bryce Young and his talented wide receiving corps lit up the Detroit Lions in a big spot on Sunday Night Football, dropping 445 total yards on a perennial playoff contender. Their defense left much to be desired, but then they faced Philadelphia in Week 6 and shut down a banged up Eagles’ operation. Philly only gained 222 yards and put up just 14 points at home In a super desperate spot -- a sign that the Panthers, who were favored, were maturing into a team that can deliver when they are expected to. Carolina enters Week 8 still in sole possession of first place in the NFC South. You wouldn’t think that following their performance this past Sunday. From the opening kickoff, arch rival Tampa Bay Bucs looked like the more energized and motivated roster -- jumping to a 33-6 lead at the end of the first half. Entering Week 7, the Panthers had top-marks offensively -- particularly in their passing attack. Last Sunday, Young and company posted a shockingly poor 104 yards and turned it over twice in the first two quarters.
Their Week 7 loss was virtually over at halftime -- a game that ended 43-13 and immediately made viewers doubt the true legitimacy of the Panthers. We’re not going to jump to assumptions that quickly -- at least not concerning their offense. Up until last week, Carolina had been very consistent on that side of the ball. The NFL is a volatile league and the Bucs simply exploded out of the gates last Sunday. It happens. Defensively, we see much room for improvement -- like their 27th ranking in points per game allowed (27.7). Long-term the Panthers won't win big marquee battles if their D doesn't improve. Week 8’s Thursday Night Football feels like another big marquee battle.
The Packers lost in Week 7, but we weren't entirely shocked to see it happen. Detroit had two weeks to prepare for that contest, and the Packers were coming off a high after beating the Cowboys in a high profile Sunday Night Football spot. Green Bay has the convenience of returning home on a short week, whereas Thursday will mark Carolina’s third straight week in which it is required to travel. The Packers’ defense has been up-and-down. On the other side, we know Jordan Love and his exceptional wide receivers can be lethal against a bad defense. Carolina's defense is better against the pass, but it is also not getting to the quarterback enough -- ranked 23rd in sack rating. Above-average offenses like the Bears and Lions produced plenty on the Panthers. We expect the same from the Packers. Even above the predominant key number of -3, we can only look to Green Bay at home.
Carolina Panthers vs Green Bay Packers prediction: Packers -3.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
