We have an NFC West showdown in Week 6 when the Arizona Cardinals make the short journey to SoFi Stadium to play the LA Rams. Both teams come into this game off losses, but those defeats looked very different. Arizona surrendered 45 points in a 24-point loss when hosting Detroit, while LA lost to Josh Allen and the Bills in overtime on Monday Night Football by three points.
We don’t see double-digit spreads very often in the NFL, but we have one this week – the Rams are laying nearly 13 points at home despite being 2-3 SU and ATS. That said, the Rams were 2-0 ATS as double-digit home favorites last year, one being against Arizona, while they also easily covered in Arizona as a -9.5 favorite – so Sean McVay knows how to win big when it’s expected.
In theory, this is an awful spot for the Rams – they’re on a short week after an overtime loss while also expected to win by two touchdowns – but it’s not the best situation for the Cardinals, either. Arizona has played against Seattle, at San Francisco, at New York Giants and then at home against the Lions in the last month, and they lost all four games – three of them by 12 or more. That’s a grueling stretch of opponents and travel, and it doesn’t get any easier against the Rams.
The backdoor is absolutely open here, but the Cardinals' defense has to get stops in order to give the offense a chance, and that’s what I’m most concerned about in this matchup. Per SumerSports, Arizona ranks 29th or worse in EPA per play and success rate allowed when trailing, surrendering the second-most passing and rushing touchdowns in those scenarios. The Cardinals' offense hasn’t been potent enough to offset those issues, sitting 20th or worse in EPA per pass and EPA per rush when trailing.
Of course, I’m assuming the Cardinals will trail for a vast majority of the game. Even with the Rams on short rest, I can’t give Arizona any type of edge early in games. The Rams have a significant coaching advantage with McVay, and the playmakers are on a different level than the Cardinals’ outside of Trey McBride. It’s not the most inviting number, but it’s Rams or pass for me in this one.
