Two years ago it looked like the Washington Commanders were a team on the rise, catapulted by a young quarterback who certainly seemed like he could transform the franchise. Fast forward to 2026, and the football team from the District of Columbia isn’t in the position they thought they would be. In truth, they’re not even close.
Very little of the blame falls on Jayden Daniels. The third-year pro has been the victim of numerous injuries, including two grotesque elbow dislocations, the last of which occurred just a few weeks ago in what was a close contest against their arch-rival, the Cowboys. Needless to say, when Daniels left the game, the Commanders’ offense was stunted. He returned last Sunday and ran for over 100 yards and two touchdowns against the Giants. He also committed one of the most egregious mishaps at the end of overtime, neglecting to stop the clock and cultivate the game-winning field goal. It ended in an embarrassing tie, instead.
Regardless of what happened in Week 5, no serious analyst would allege that the Commanders are “better off” without the former LSU star. Daniels remains a game-changer. In his first season as their starting quarterback, he led Washington to an NFC Championship game, which sparked hope in the DC fanbase.
So far, Daniels and the Commanders aren’t sustaining that hope. Dan Quinn is suddenly on the proverbial chopping block after last week’s snafu, and their defense allows a third-worst 29.8 points per game. Their passing attack, which so far has only produced 6.1 yards per pass (27th), has been plagued by injury, too (Terry McLaurin has struggled to stay healthy and Stefon Diggs is questionable to play Sunday night).
There isn’t much negative we can say about the 49ers. San Francisco is our #1 rated team, the most legitimate undefeated team left (although Kansas City looks fantastic, too – sorry Vikings). Last Sunday’s win was ugly (three turnovers, 269 total yards), but that they can win ugly, and injured, all while against a top-tier opponent is all notable. In all categories and despite many internal challenges, the Niners rank in the top-five. Coincidentally, they’re a top-three pass offense and pass defense, which happen to be the key ingredients to winning in the NFL.
That makes the 49ers a really easy pick or SNF, right? Well...
The 49ers are at home and they’re most analysts' top-rated program. Meanwhile, Washington is currently the running joke of NFL media. The decision should be easy, and that’s why it’s not. If the Commanders were awful, they would be more than +7.5 dogs, especially on the road. The market knows they’re not; they’re a top-11 group against the run and Daniels adds a trustworthy element to their offense, regardless of how mind-numbing his choices were last weekend. They’re also wildly desperate and getting called out across the league. In particular, Micah Parsons blasted him on his podcast, saying, “Jayden Daniels probably cost Dan Quinn his job.”
The Commanders are composed of veteran NFL players. That means they have a ton of experience and pride. No one is expecting them to hang around in this game, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they got blown out. At the same time, the Niners are incredibly banged up and luck has largely gone their way. We think Washington makes it interesting here.
Commanders vs 49ers prediction: Commanders +7.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number to -120.
