The talking point surrounding this game is Deshaun Watson and the Browns being favorites on the road, and I can understand the hesitation backing this team in this spot – but not against the Titans. Sure, you could argue the Browns are in a flat or sandwich spot after a big win over the Ravens and a date with the Steelers looming, but the Titans’ road win over the Colts – their first of the season – negates that perceived situational advantage for the Titans a bit, in my opinion.
The best unit on the field in this matchup is Cleveland’s defense, a unit that is top-15 in EPA per play allowed and fourth in success rate allowed. Not to mention, the Browns are first in tackles for loss, second in pressure rate, fifth in sack rate, fourth in completion percentage and ninth in stuff rate according to SumerSports, while they’ve allowed a touchdown on just 37.5% of opposing red-zone attempts on the road – which is top-five in the NFL. To make matters worse for Tennessee, Mason Graham is expected back for Cleveland this week after missing the last two games.
Opposite of the Browns defense, the Titans' offense feels overmatched. Tennessee is dead last in total offense and points per game, while they are 30th in EPA per play and 24th in success rate. The Titans have also been pretty bad in the red zone, converting fewer than 50% of their opportunities.
For as bad as the Titans are offensively, the Browns are right there with them. However, the Titans haven’t been quite as strong defensively as the Browns, allowing at least 20 points in all but one game while sitting outside the top 20 in EPA per play, success rate allowed and pressure rate. To compare, the Browns have surrendered 20 points just twice. Meanwhile, Tennessee is below average in the red zone as well, yielding a touchdown on more than 63% of attempts at home.
These teams are pretty even offensively, but the Browns take the cake in the defensive department. With the line essentially at a pick ‘em, I could only go with Cleveland here. For what it’s worth, Tennessee hasn’t won two straight games in almost four years.
