Promoted West Brom have played their part in a goal-crazy start to the Premier League season, losing 3-0 at home to Leicester and 5-2 at Everton before a dramatic 3-3 tie with Chelsea.
The Baggies went 3-0 up inside the first half-hour against Frank Lampard’s side before a second-half capitulation and their wait for a first win of the season goes on after a 2-0 defeat at Southampton last time out.
Opponents Burnley haven’t even picked up a point from their first three matches against Leicester, Southampton and Newcastle and the Clarets’ strong finish to last season already seems a distant memory.
Sean Dyche’s men lost only two of their last 15 games in 2019-20 on their way to a tenth-placed finish but they have struggled to get going this term.
It is hard to have confidence in either side given West Brom’s defensive weakness and the lack of creativity in the Burnley ranks.
The Clarets will hope that the international break eases their early-season injury crisis and Dyche will be determined to make them harder to beat. A tie may not satisfy either team but it looks the best bet at The Hawthorns.
Leeds are unbeaten in 11 matches at Elland Road and they can extend that streak to 12 with a tie against Wolves.
If you’d offered Leeds’ fans the top half after four games, a sequence which included fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester City, they’d have snapped your hands off – but now comes another serious test.
Wolves might have made a spluttering start to the season but Nuno Espirito Santo’s men still represent a formidable challenge for a bunch of newcomers.
There haven’t been many close calls in the Premier League campaign to date but this could well be one of them.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men signalled from the outset that they weren’t going to be Premier League pushovers. Hugely impressive in a 4-3 loss at Anfield, they reversed that scoreline at home to Fulham.
A 1-0 win at Sheffield United followed and then came the pick of the results, a 1-1 tie at home to Manchester City, evidence that they do belong in the big league.
As for Wolves, the most surprising result so far was the 4-0 humbling at West Ham, a size of defeat which you don’t associate with a team as frugal as they are.
They bounced back with a thoroughly disciplined 1-0 win at home to Fulham and another tight affair is forecast on Monday.
The New England Revolution will be looking to stay hot when they entertain the Philadelphia Union on Monday night. New England has won two in a row and it has taken points in six of its last seven matches (4-1-2). That is not to say that this is going to be easy for the Revolution, because Philadelphia is the real deal. The Union are in second place in the Eastern Conference with 35 points (three places and eight points clear of New England) and they won their previous matchup with the Revolution 2-1 at home on Sept. 12. Anthony Fontana scored a pair of goals in that contest and he also found the back of the net in his club’s most recent outing, an unceremonious 2-2 draw against DC United on Wednesday. That performance does not bode well for Philly’s chances of outclassing another opponent that is well below it in the standings. However, it should at least be able to come away with a point even though New England is playing great soccer these days. The Revolution are without Luis Caceido, Carles Gil, Gustavo Bao, and and Cristian Penilla. A draw of either 1-1 or 2-2 seems well within the realm of possibility.
The magic seems to have gone from Lazio after they messed up a title challenge last season and Borussia Dortmund can win on the road in Rome.
Lazio have conceded four in a loss to Atalanta and three in defeat at Sampdoria. Dortmund’s ace forwards will be licking their chops at the prospect of getting many chances.
Timo Werner now spearheads the Chelsea offense and scored his first Premier League goals of the season in Saturday’s 3-3 tie with Southampton in a game which once again highlighted where the problems lie for the London outfit.
Frank Lampard’s team also conceded three at West Brom earlier in the EPL season and they could struggle to see off counterattacking specialists Sevilla, who won the Europa League last season.
Paris St-Germain reached the Champions League final last season and can start this year’s competition in fine style with a comprehensive win over Manchester United.
PSG are unbeaten in their last 24 matches at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League group stage and their offense should prove way too hot for United.
Kylian Mbappe and Neymar offer fantastic forward options for Thomas Tuchel’s team and PSG have now scored in their last 34 UCL matches. If they find the target against United it will break the Champions League record for goals scored in consecutive games set by Real Madrid.
United got back to winning ways on the road at Newcastle on Saturday with a 4-1 victory but they conceded six in defeat to Tottenham and three in a loss to Crystal Palace. Even their 3-2 win over Brighton was lucky as Albion hit the woodwork an amazing five times and those first three games saw 11 goals conceded – United’s worst defense start since 1930.
