Newcastle barely laid a glove on Chelsea at the weekend but is not in bad shape with 11 points from nine games and can avoid defeat at Selhurst Park on Friday.

Steve Bruce has been criticized by some Newcastle supporters, who want a more attacking approach but he is probably applying the right tactics for the players at his disposal.

The Magpies have looked a threat on the counter-attack with the pace of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin and picked up some good away results, winning 2-0 at West Ham and tying 1-1 at Tottenham and Wolves.

They were poor in a 2-0 loss at Southampton before the international break and struggled to get going against Chelsea but will view the trip to Selhurst Park as a decent chance to get back on track.

Palace’s strategy is not too dissimilar to Newcastle because they prefer to sit deep and use the counter-attacking thrust of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend.

Those tactics worked a treat in the 4-1 success at home to Leeds because there were frequent opportunities to exploit Marcelo Bielsa’s high press.

However, a very different game is in store against Newcastle and there are value grounds for backing the visitors to secure at least a share of the spoils.

Brighton faces a huge task trying to contain champions Liverpool at the Amex on Saturday.

The Seagulls are 16th and have managed just two wins from their first nine games, so trying to get anything off the Reds, who laid down an impressive title statement when beating Leicester on Sunday, will be extremely tough, even with the visitors’ ongoing injury problems.

Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Joe Gomez all remain out for Liverpool, but they demonstrated last week against Leicester that their stand-ins are more than capable and a trip to the south coast shouldn’t hold too many fears for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

In their three previous league trips to the Amex, Liverpool have registered three wins, scored nine goals, and conceded just two, and another similar comfortable outcome seems highly likely.

In Diogo Jota, who has eight goals in his first 12 games for the club, they have one of the league’s in-form frontmen and the Portuguese star can have a field day up against a defense that has conceded 15 goals already this season. Jota is difficult to contain on his own, but with Sadio Mane also due a goal and Roberto Firmino ending his relative drought with the third against the Foxes, Brighton will surely have their hands full at the back.

Brighton is yet to win at home in the league and, while Liverpool’s slip-ups so far this term have all come on the road, it would be a huge shock if the south coast outfit were able to stun the champions here.

That said, there is an argument to suggest Brighton has not always got what they deserved so far this season. Last weekend’s 2-1 win at Aston Villa will have boosted confidence and nicely reinforced the feeling that Darren Potter’s side is better than those around them towards the bottom of the table. Indeed, in defeats against Manchester United and ties with Crystal Palace and Burnley, in particular, Brighton were the better side but let themselves down with some wayward finishing.

The Seagulls were worthy of the three points at Villa, too, even though they escaped late on with a VAR penalty decision that probably should have gone against them. Potter will be frustrated with Tariq Lamptey’s sending off, which means he is suspended against the Reds, as the young wing-back’s pace could have caused Liverpool problems on the break. Overall, a dominant away win appeals.

Manchester City should be able to brush struggling Burnley aside at the Etihad on Saturday.

City has been far from their devastating best so far this season and their 2-0 defeat at Tottenham last time out underlined their problems.

Pep Guardiola’s side has plenty of work to do to get back into title contention and, while you wouldn’t be surprised to see them improve significantly over the winter, a surprising lack of goals plus a tendency to concede sloppily at the back recently means they are way off the pace in 13th.

The Citizens are simply not firing – and Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez have all underperformed of late.

However, a home clash against the Clarets is a very different prospect to a trip to Spurs. Sean Dyche’s men have been woeful and managed just three goals in their first seven games. They are beginning to have an air of relegation material about them and the last thing they would want is a visit to the Etihad, where they have been hammered 5-0 on the last three occasions.

Sergio Aguero is close to a comeback and he can be the catalyst for City rediscovering their goalscoring touch in a straightforward home win.

Entertainment has been guaranteed when Everton and Leeds have played this season and goals look likely in Saturday’s clash at Goodison Park.

The Toffees bagged another three in Sunday’s win at Fulham, taking their tally to 19 goals in nine league matches, but a leaky backline will be a concern for Carlo Ancelotti.

Fulham scored twice and could have had more, with Everton leaking 16 goals so far in all competitions and keeping just one clean sheet this season – that was an opening weekend win at Tottenham.

Leeds has impressed many onlookers on their return to the top flight, but they still sit in the bottom half and have collected just one win in their last five.

It’s worth noting though that Marcelo Bielsa’s men have scored eight goals in their four away games to date – winning two of those fixtures at Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

It’s five years since the two teams last met, with two or more goals scored in the last four meetings between the sides.

West Brom has been playing some decent football without getting the rewards but can breathe life into their survival hopes by defeating Sheffield United at the Hawthorns.

It is early days in the battle against the drop but the bottom four teams are struggling to stay in touch with those above them and it seems likely that only of them will preserve top-flight status.

Of the quartet, the most positive recent signs have come from West Brom were the better side in the first half of their 1-0 loss at home to Tottenham, and gave as good as they got in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United last weekend.

Key decisions went against Slaven Bilic’s side at Old Trafford where they had plenty of controlled possession and looked more of a threat after the introduction of substitute Callum Robinson.

Losing to two of the big six was perhaps to be expected but Albion is playing well enough to be competitive against the other teams and should fancy their chances this week.

Sheffield United was outstanding last season and seemed to catch opponents out with their ambitious tactics and boundless energy.

However, they have not won in 12 league games and their miserable run is set to continue.

Many will be surprised to see Southampton above Manchester United in the table at this stage, but a big contrast in home performances has been the real difference between the sides.

Saints have won three on the bounce at St Mary’s and have not conceded a goal on home soil in that time, in contrast to just one win in five for United at Old Trafford.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men look a different side away from home, winning their last seven on the road going back to last season, including wins at Everton, Newcastle, and Brighton this term.

Marcus Rashford has enjoyed more space and more freedom away from home and has bagged three goals in the five away league wins. The England international also scored when the teams last met – a 2-2 tie at Old Trafford in July.

United are also unbeaten in their last 12 games at Southampton, which includes a 1-1 tie when the teams met on the south coast last season.

Frank Lampard will be looking to get another victory over his former manager Jose Mourinho when Chelsea host Tottenham on Sunday.

Lampard was a key figure under Mourinho during his playing days at Chelsea, and he has enjoyed great success against the Special One since embarking on his own managerial career.

Chelsea beat Tottenham home and away last season, becoming the first team ever to achieve that feat against a Mourinho-managed team in a single league campaign.

Mourinho was also on the losing side when Lampard led Derby to a famous victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2018.

The apprentice certainly seems to have learned a lot from his former master and Sunday’s meeting should be another intriguing installment as the two London-rivals look to strengthen their title claims.

Chelsea spent a brief period at the top of the standings on Saturday after earning a comfortable 2-0 victory over Newcastle to extend their unbeaten league run to six games.

Tottenham, meanwhile, ended Saturday evening as the league leaders following an extremely impressive 2-0 triumph against Manchester City, taking their unbeaten streak to seven matches.

Both clubs made big changes over the summer with Frank Lampard and Jose Mourinho seeking to address problem areas and the early signs certainly look positive.

After a bedding-in period for the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea look a serious threat in the final third.

The Blues are the highest scorers in the division after nine games, notching 22 goals but they have also been much-improved defensively.

Lampard guided Chelsea to fourth place last term, however, they ended the campaign with the worst defensive record of any side to finish in the top 10.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy appears to have fixed that problem, conceding just one goal in five Premier League appearances, while the Blues have the second-best defensive record in the league so far this season.

Tottenham begins this weekend’s round of fixtures at the summit and with a target on their back after giving City the full Mourinho treatment last time out.

Mourinho parked the bus against the Citizens but, in what looks to be a development in his approach, he left the handbrake off and allowed Spurs’ attacking options to roll on forwards on the counter to great effect.

Expect another well-organized performance from Spurs this weekend, especially considering they are on the road, and goals are likely to be at a premium.

The pressure is mounting on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and his problems could increase when the Gunners take on Wolves this weekend.

Arteta was widely praised as a man with a plan after Arsenal won 1-0 at Manchester United earlier this month but his side has looked toothless in the 3-0 loss at home to Aston Villa and the 0-0 tie at Leeds.

Arsenal has fallen into the bottom half of the table and Arteta’s options appear to be shrinking with Nicolas Pepe suspended and Bukayo Saka struggling with a knee injury.

The games keep coming thick and fast (Arsenal visit Molde in the Europa League on Thursday) but Arteta’s main focus will be on the clash against Wolves, which promises to be closely contested.

Wolves manager Nuno was reportedly a former target of the Gunners’ hierarchy and has continued to impress by leading the club to successive seventh-place finishes.

His team is among the division’s best exponents of counter-attacking football, making them especially effective on the road.

Wolves have won on six of their last 12 Premier League road trips, including a notable 3-2 success at Tottenham, and will fancy their chances of fulfilling another fruitful trip to north London.

Two sides with contrasting ambitions meet on Monday when title-chasing Leicester host relegation-threatened Fulham.

The Foxes suffered a setback in being beaten 3-0 at Liverpool on Sunday but have the ideal chance to hit back here. However, Brendan Rodgers’ side has lost two of their four home outings in the league, and in such an unpredictable season, it could be games like this that define whether they are title contenders, or simply great pretenders.

Fulham was again the architects of their own downfall on Sunday against Everton, starting slowly before missing their fifth penalty from their last eight attempts in the Premier League, an error that contributed to them going down 3-2 at home.

Earning just four points from nine games, there’s no secret where Scott Parker’s side are suffering, conceding 18 times this term, the joint-worst defensive record in the league alongside West Brom.

The Cottagers have goals in their cannon though, scoring in four of their last five and will fancy themselves to test a defense that looked stretched at Anfield.

That might not be enough and Leicester’s superior firepower should see them through.

There’s a Claret and Blue derby on Monday as West Ham welcome Aston Villa to East London.

David Moyes’ side became the first capital club to win at Sheffield United in the Premier League since 2006 on Sunday, triumphing 1-0, and have lost just one of their last six.

Whisper it, but there is also a feeling the Hammers are finally finding their feet at the London Stadium, recovering from their 2-0 opening weekend loss to Newcastle to seal wins over Wolves and Fulham, either side of a tie against Manchester City.

Villa was on the wrong end of a 2-1 home reverse to Brighton on Saturday but has been perfect on the road this season, winning all five away games in the league and cup.

In fact, they are yet to concede away from home in the Premier League and have fond memories of this fixture after securing their Premier League status last term with a 1-1 final day tie in east London.

Villa sits a point ahead of the Hammers and top-half finishes have to be the goal for both Moyes and Dean Smith.

With both impressing after being tipped for relegation, these two look tough to split.
