The Red Wings return home following a 3-game road trip that saw them play a pair of overtime thrillers. It may take them some time to settle into this one, and Los Angeles goaltender Darcy Kuemper has allowed 2 goals or fewer in 3 of his last 5 starts. With a total of 5.5, look to the under.

They are coming off a game in which they held an offensive juggernaut Tampa Bay Lightning to just 2 goals (one in an empty net). Prior to that they absolutely dominated, winning 5 straight games and going 8-0-1 over 9 games. This is clearly a hungry team, as they are striving to give Utah fans a playoff berth in their second season. Florida has also looked sharp, winning 3 straight and 4 of the last 5. However, this season has proven that the Panthers are not unbeatable compared to what they have shown over the past few seasons. The Mammoth will have to flex their fifth-best goals-against average in this one, and if they can’t pull off a win then I expect things to be tight until the end. It suffered a 7-1 loss at Ottawa last time out on Sunday, as the Over (6.5) cashed.

The Canadiens suffered a 4-3 loss in Boston last time out on Saturday, and the Habs are struggling a little bit lately — going just 2-3-1 in the past 6 games. The Over has cashed in 4 of the past 5 outings. Montreal has had a lot of trouble stopping the puck lately, as neither Jakub Dobes nor Sam Montembeault haas struggled. The Habs have allowed 3 or more goals in 8 consecutive outings, giving 31 goals in that span. Let’s go with the over and feel rather confident in doing so.

Tuesday night in the NHL brings us a matchup between the Winnipeg Jets and New Jersey Devils. Although they hail from different conferences, these teams are well aware of each other following a January 11 bout that resulted in a tight 4-3 Jets win. When these teams met last we saw a total of 7 goals, and I am expecting a similar result in this game. The total is set quite low at 5.5 goals, and in a combined effort I think these teams can satisfy the over. Both teams come into this one with decent powerplays near the 20% mark and mediocre penalty kills less than 80%. Goaltending and team defense have not been ideal for both, as they both allow 3.06 goals per game and have sub-.897 save percentages. Both teams have not necessarily showcased impressive offense, either, but the teams have combined for 8 games where one of them has scored 4+ goals in a game this month. The Blackhawks are averaging the second-fewest shots on goal per game, which doesn’t bode well going up against an explosive team like the Wild. The Wild should be able to dominate this weaker inexperienced Blackhawks team. Give me Minnesota in this one.

The Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues are set for their second consecutive meeting on Tuesday night. These teams met on Friday night, with Jason Robertson potting the game-winning goal for Dallas in the final minute of regulation to give the Stars a 3-2 win. That matchup stayed under the total, but this meeting could be a bit more higher scoring. The Stars are among the highest-scoring teams in the NHL, and they have been great at lightning the lamp on the road. More specifically, the Stars rank fifth in the NHL scoring at 3.39 goals per game on the road. Joel Hofer is projected to get the start in net for St. Louis, and while his numbers on the season are an upgrade from Jordan Binnington, he doesn’t exactly warrant a ton of confidence. The Blues are not a strong defensive team, and the Stars should be able to take advantage.

Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger has struggled this month, owning a .873 save percentage to go along with a 3.13 goals-against average through 8 starts in January. The Blues have struggled to score goals all season long, but they have been slightly better at home and could be catching Oettinger at the right time. St. Louis is also coming off a strong offensive showing on Saturday against the Kings, scoring 4 goals, and it could have some offensive momentum from that performance. All in all, both of these offensive attacks seem to have the advantage. Let’s roll with the over.

With more motivation and a higher offensive ceiling, the Sharks are the team to back in this matchup.

Both teams have produced mediocre records so far this season, but both have their sights on a playoff berth. These teams have been highly inconsistent lately, so it is hard to gauge which version we will see from each. One consistent trend has been high scores. Seattle has seen 6 of its last 8 games finish with at least 6 total goals, while Washington has seen 4 of its last 5 games end with at least 7 total goals. With the volatility from these teams and an expected urgency to win, I believe we may be in for some chaos. Washington scores at a decent pace, but with the talent on that team I think the Caps can fill the net on any given night — especially against Seattle. As for the Kraken offensively, you won’t see them high on the list of goals per game — but their 10th-best powerplay facing Washington’s 10h-worst penalty kill could increase offensive production.
