BUF Sabres Win(-105)

The Olympic break is finally over and tonight we will see the Buffalo Sabres take on the New Jersy Devils. The Sabres currently sit at 6th place in the Easten Conference. They also rank 8th in the NHL with 3.37 goals per game. This is wild consider the Sabres ranked 14th in the Eastern Conference last year. Part of this shift is due to an increase in productive goaltending. This season the Sabres have a goalie save percentage of .897, ranking them 8th in the NHL. This is a stark improvement that they will look to build on following the break.

For the Devils, they have been on a downward slide this season. They currently rank 15th in the Eastern Conference when they ended last season at 7th with a playoff spot. This downhill spiral can be contributed to their inability to score goals. On the season, they rank 31st in goals per game with only 2.51 goals. This lack of scoring is partly due to the poor shots they take. On the season they have only scored on 8.6% of their shots. Making matters worse, they rank in the bottom half of the NHL in penalty kill percentage and the Sabres have scored 34 power play goals this season. Given this difficulty to score and the Sabres improved goaltending this season, I am rolling with the Sabres to get the win Wednesday night.

TOR Maple Leafs Win +1.5(-140)

The NHL is back and brings us eight exciting matchups, including a battle between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning. These Atlantic Division teams have played just once this season, in a 2-0 Toronto win. How will this one play out? Here is our Maple Leafs vs. Lightning prediction.

This is a star-studded matchup, but key pieces to Toronto’s lineup is in question. While he is expected to play, Auston Matthews’ availability is in question due to a busy schedule and possible rest requirements after his Olympic gold medal win on Sunday. John Tavares (illness) could also see himself out of the lineup. Meanwhile, Brayden Point returns to the Lightning lineup, along with Victor Hedman who was injured during the Olympics. While Tampa Bay boasts the better roster regardless if Matthews and Tavares suit up, Toronto was on an absolute heater before the Olympics, with a three-game winning streak. Make no mistake, the Maple Leafs will have a tough time securing a victory on the road  against this powerhouse, but their momentum and playoff desire should propel a good effort. The time is now if Toronto wants to salvage their season, and with a win against the Lightning already this season, they should be able to at least keep this one close. For our Maple Leafs vs. Lightning prediction, take Toronto’s +1.5 puck line.

Maple Leafs vs. Lightning prediction: Toronto Maple Leafs +1.5 (-140) available at time of publishing. Playable at that line to (-150).

Under 6.5(-125)

The Colorado Avalanche head over the Rocky Mountains to not-so-snowy Salt Lake City for a battle against the Utah Mammoth, as play resumes after the three-week hiatus due to the Olympic break. The Avs were 37-9-9 prior to the break, so will the time off derail Colorado, or will it be able to pick up right where it left off? We know F Nathan MacKinnon will be on a mission, as he was clearly disappointed, and even angry, after losing the Gold Medal game to Team USA in the Milano-Cortina Olympic games. But, we could see a bit of a slow go out of the gate for both offenses after the layoff, as teams knock off a little rust and get back up to speed.

In the first three meetings this season, the Under cashed in two of the battles, including a 1-0 win by Colorado at Ball Arena in Denver on Dec. 23 in the most recent matchup. Before heading to the break, the Avalanche cashed low in three in a row, all with Mackenzie Blackwood in between the pipes. The Under is 4-2 in the past six road games for Colorado, too. For Utah, the Under cashed in two of the final three games before heading out for the break. The Over-Under is 5-5 in the past 10 home games for Utah. Look for Karel Vejmelka for the Mammoth, and either Blackwood or Scott Wedgewood to hold down the Utah offensive attack. Let’s go low, and let’s be rather aggressive about it.

Under 6.5 (-125) at time of publishing. Playable to -140.

LA Kings Win(-150)

The Vegas Golden Knights and Los Angeles Kings kick off their post-Olympics stretch with a major division rivalry. The Pacific Division opponents meet for the fourth and final time this season, as Vegas looks to win their third-straight against Los Angeles. Here is our Golden Knights vs. Kings prediction to get you set for the action.

While the Olympics generated a regular season-ending injury to key forward Kevin Fiala, the Kings have yet to see newly-acquired star Artemi Panarin in the lineup, but they will here. I expect a big buzz from the crowd as this team makes a major push towards the playoffs, and what a better way to start than taking down the division leaders. This is no easy task, but I expect the Kings to have fresh legs, and their roster should match up well as Vegas will be without USA gold medal winners in Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin. This is an opportunity for Los Angeles to pounce, and I say they do so. For our Golden Knights vs. Kings prediction, we are siding with the home team in Los Angeles on the money line.

VAN Canucks Win(+115)

The Winnipeg Jets are set to begin the post-Olympic slate on the road against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night. Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor and Connor Hellebuyck won Gold with Team USA in Italy, with Hellebuyck putting together an unforgettable performance between the pipes through the tournament and in the Gold medal game against Canada. Not surprisingly, Hellebuyck will get Wednesday night off in Vancouver, as Jets head coach Scott Arniel has already announced that Eric Comrie will get the starting nod in net. Comrie has won just 9 of his 19 starts on the season, and he has struggled on the road. More specifically, Comrie’s save percentage drops from .903 at home to .880 on the road, and his goals-against average goes from 2.62 to 3.64.

Vancouver’s offensive attack is among the lowest-scoring in the NHL, but they seem to have a much more favorable matchup going up against Comrie as opposed to Hellebuyck. Winnipeg defensemen Josh Morrissey will also be unavailable for this contest, as he suffered an upper body injury in the first game of the Olympics and never returned to the ice the rest of the tournament. Morrissey is a bonafide star No. 1 defenseman, and his absence is a big loss for a Winnipeg team that was already struggling mightily this season. Make it a small play, but consider fading the Jets on the road and backing the Canucks in this Western Conference matchup.

Jets vs Canucks prediction: Canucks ML (+115) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.

Over 6.5(-120)

The NHL returns after the Olympics, and a busy night in the league includes a Pacific Division clash between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks. Just one point separates the two teams, so the importance of this game cannot be underestimated. To get you set for the action to come, we have provided our expert Oilers vs. Ducks prediction.

I think each team will come into this one with a massive urgency, as they each have a long way to go in solidifying any playoff positioning. With that, I expect the offense of each team to shine. We have seen excellent offensive results from both teams this season, as Edmonton owns the fourth-highest goals per game average (3.41), and Anaheim scores well over three goals per game (3.20) and have a young, high-flying team. Connor McDavid comes into this one questionable to play, but each side will be filled with fresh skaters that can fly around the ice and produce offense, including Leon Draisaitl who is fifth in NHL scoring (29). Goaltending and defense has been a major question mark for both, as their goals against averages are each in the bottom eight, giving up over 3.28 goals per game, and each have save percentages below .889. As fans, this could be a fun one to watch, as our Oilers vs. Ducks prediction leans on over 6.5 goals.

How Do I Get NHL Picks For Today’s Games?

NHL Picks are most similar to MLB Picks, in that the most popular NHL wagering is done via the Money line (ML) where a bettor simply picks a winner or loser of the game finding value in the price. Just like an MLB pitcher, NHL game lines are determined largely by the goaltender matchup. You’re going to pay a premium price (-180 or more) for putting in an NHL free pick on a solid goaltender – but it’s one position that can win or lose the bet for you. Fatigue is also a factor in finding the best NHL picks as Team A may be playing their first game in a week while Team B is in their 3rd contest in 5 nights.

We try to post our NHL picks for today at least 24 hours in advance. However, due to the huge volume of games, this can sometimes be impossible if teams are playing back-to-back games. We want to get our picks up as close as possible to the opening lines so we can get on the early line value, but team news and research is always key to making the best possible NHL Picks.

NHL Picks Against the Spread

NHL betting has a 1.5-goal spread known as the puck line (PL). Again just like baseball betting has the run line (-1.5). NHL wagers are exciting until the very last second of the game as teams often pull their goaltender near the end to get an extra skater on the ice. All of a sudden an empty-net goal pushes your NHL free pick to victory – or defeat. Betting on the puck line provides better payout odds and NHL picks against the spread can also be pushed to higher numbers such as -2.5 or 3.5 goals for an even better return on investment.

Free NHL Over / Under Picks

Most games are listed right around 5.5 goals in the NHL. The total number of goals is the total of combined goals by both teams and you can either select over or under the total. If the line is 5.5 and you wish to wager on the over then the total combined goals for the game must be 6 or more for you to cash your ticket.

NHL over/under betting is an interesting wager. A huge factor to take into consideration is the goaltenders as they have a huge part to play in influencing the number of goals in the game. A goaltender’s Goals Against Average (GAA) is a key stat to measure the effectiveness of a goaltender.

NHL Consensus Picks

NHL Consensus Picks is a way of saying the popular pick or often referred to as a public pick. What this actually means is where the majority of the bets are being placed. If we’re looking at Money Line markets, for example, if 70% of the tickets are on the Pittsburgh Penguins to beat the New York Islanders, then the Penguins are the consensus pick for that game. Bettors can use this in their research or check possible line moves in the lead-up to a game.

Ice Hockey Betting Picks

Our ice hockey betting picks will typically follow and feature on the NHL season with picks and Predictions available all season long. Our experts will be primed and ready in times of Olympic years and select other competitions throughout the year too. Our ice hockey picks, as expected will include picks on the money line, puck line, totals, and several player and team Hockey Prop Bets

Hockey Computer Picks

With so many hockey games played each season, analytics, lineups, and small changes can make a huge difference in a matchup. These are just some of the reasons why bettors may opt to use or consider hockey computer picks, as a metric that can be rid of human bias, and offer a solely data-driven analytical look at a matchup, betting markets, and projections.
