A busy Sunday in the NHL kicks off with a matchup between the Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers. These two came into the season with high expectations, but are both destined for a playoff absence. As each try and build some season-ending success, we are here to provide our Jets vs. Rangers prediction.

Winnipeg will be playing in their second game in as many nights, and third of a three-game road trip. They have now also lost three-straight games, and have give up a whopping 15 goals during a 0-1-2 run. Fatigue will likely play a factor for them in this game, and they really don’t have much going for them. As for New York, they are trying to kick a three-game skid of their own, however they have not played since Thursday. Special teams may also play a big factor here, as New York owns the seventh-best power play (24%) in the NHL. New York took down Winnipeg 6-3 less than two weeks ago, and while it may not a blowout this time around, I expect the same result. For our Jets vs. Rangers prediction, take New York on the money line.

The Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals clash on Sunday afternoon in the NHL. The Capitals try to hold on for dear life as they try and keep their playoff hopes alive. They now welcome in one of the NHL’s best, which is an absolute prove-it game. It is now time for our Avalanche vs. Capitals prediction.

After an early-season pure domination by the Avalanche, middling recent results have allowed their NHL lead to dwindle to three points. While their playoff spot is locked, they still have lots to play for in terms of prolonged home ice advantage. They have been impressive on the road this season (21-7-5), and still hold the league lead in goals per game (3.69) and goals against per game (2.46). They also own the fourth-best penalty kill at 82.9%. Washington meanwhile doesn’t match up well here. Their defensive efforts have been admirable this season, but the offensive production has been quite different, which includes a 29th overall power play at 16.5%. Even on home ice, the Capitals will struggle dictating the play against this hungry and powerful team. Take Colorado on the money line for this Avalanche vs. Capitals prediction.

Over the past 5 games, the Predators have only allowed 12 total goals. This is improved form compared to the 3.35 goals against average they have this season. These improvements are not only on defense; on the offensive side they have scored 3+ goals in 5 of their last 6 games. These improvements seem to be a clear motivation for a playoff push.

For the Blackhawks, they currently rank 14th in the Western Conference and have lost 3 of their last 4 games. The Blackhawks issues start on the offensive side. They are only averaging 2.58 goals per game which ranks them 30th in the NHL. Not only have goals been an issue, but the Blackhawks also rank last in total shots on target only averaging 24.3 shots per game. At home, the Blackhawks have lost 7 of their last 10 games. NHL Picks are most similar to MLB Picks, in that the most popular NHL wagering is done via the Money line (ML) where a bettor simply picks a winner or loser of the game finding value in the price. Just like an MLB pitcher, NHL game lines are determined largely by the goaltender matchup. You’re going to pay a premium price (-180 or more) for putting in an NHL free pick on a solid goaltender – but it’s one position that can win or lose the bet for you. Fatigue is also a factor in finding the best NHL picks as Team A may be playing their first game in a week while Team B is in their 3rd contest in 5 nights.

We try to post our NHL picks for today at least 24 hours in advance. However, due to the huge volume of games, this can sometimes be impossible if teams are playing back-to-back games. We want to get our picks up as close as possible to the opening lines so we can get on the early line value, but team news and research is always key to making the best possible NHL Picks.

NHL Picks Against the Spread

NHL betting has a 1.5-goal spread known as the puck line (PL). Again just like baseball betting has the run line (-1.5). NHL wagers are exciting until the very last second of the game as teams often pull their goaltender near the end to get an extra skater on the ice. All of a sudden an empty-net goal pushes your NHL free pick to victory – or defeat. Betting on the puck line provides better payout odds and NHL picks against the spread can also be pushed to higher numbers such as -2.5 or 3.5 goals for an even better return on investment.

Most games are listed right around 5.5 goals in the NHL. The total number of goals is the total of combined goals by both teams and you can either select over or under the total. If the line is 5.5 and you wish to wager on the over then the total combined goals for the game must be 6 or more for you to cash your ticket.

NHL over/under betting is an interesting wager. A huge factor to take into consideration is the goaltenders as they have a huge part to play in influencing the number of goals in the game. A goaltender’s Goals Against Average (GAA) is a key stat to measure the effectiveness of a goaltender.
