Point Spread Pick
UConn -5.5(-110)

It’s not even Feast Week yet and we have massive college basketball games night after night. It’s truly a beautiful sight to see. Unlike a lot of these early-season heavyweight bouts, this matchup between the Arizona Wildcats and the UConn Huskies will not be played on a neutral court — but rather in Storrs, Connecticut at UConn’s Gampel Pavilion. UConn comes into this matchup following a narrow victory over BYU at TD Garden, a game in which the Huskies led by as many as 20 points before ultimately winning by just 2. Meanwhile, Arizona also had a non-conference game in an NBA arena over the weekend — when it beat UCLA 69-65 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Despite playing UCLA in L.A., this will be Arizona’s first true road game of the season — and my oh my what a scene it will be. UConn’s Gampel Pavilion is an intimate, on-campus venue that is vastly intimidating for opponents to play in. It figures to be a raucous crowd on Wednesday for what will be by far the biggest home game of the season to this point.

After nearly blowing a 20-point lead against BYU, I’m expecting a locked-in performance from UConn on its home floor. Arizona is supremely talented, but the Wildcats don’t have much depth and half of their rotation consists of freshmen who have never played in a hostile environment like Gampel. Moreover, I’m not a fan of Arizona’s cross-country travel — especially not after such a hard-fought game against UCLA on Friday (a game the Wildcats trailed by 6 with just about 5 minutes left). Arizona hasn’t had much of a perimeter threat away from home this year, and given how strong UConn’s defense is at the rim, I’m expecting the Wildcats to struggle to score consistently for 40 minutes. Turnovers have also been a concern early this season for Arizona, which sits 224th in turnover rate and 245th in turnovers per game. Give me UConn by 3+ possessions.

Arizona vs UConn prediction: Connecticut -5.5 (-110) at the time of publishing. Playable to -6.
