While it’s not one of the marquee games on the schedule on Saturday, this ACC tilt between Duke and Virginia Tech has real implications in terms of the Hokies’ postseason aspirations, and it could also serve as a much-needed road test for a Blue Devils team that has played the majority of their marquee games at home. Duke is undoubtedly one of the best teams in the nation yet again this season, but this does profile as the type of sleepy spot that could really benefit Virginia Tech from a situational perspective. After all, Jon Scheyer’s team is coming off a dominant victory over Louisville earlier this week, and the first of two meetings against North Carolina is just a week away. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be a shock if the Blue Devils weren’t at their best in what will be an early start time on the road.

On the other side, the hosts are in desperate need of a massive win to boost their NCAA Tournament resume, and this has been a series where the Hokies have won a few games in the recent past. Not only does Virginia Tech have a bit of an edge in this one from a motivational factor, the Hokies are a team that is a bit better than what their record suggests. In fact, Mike Young’s team has 3 losses by a combined 6 points in conference play, which suggests that Virginia Tech is due for a bit of close-game regression. While I don’t see them springing the outright upset over a Duke team that is one of the 5 or 6 best teams in the nation by most metrics, Virginia Tech doesn’t turn the ball over on offense and does an excellent job of defending the 3-point line on the other side of the ball. That kind of profile is one that is well-suited for a pesky underdog, and this could be an instance where a desperate home team puts a scare into a heavy favorite.
