Alabama -12.5(-112)

The Maryland Terrapins and the Alabama Crimson Tide will meet in the consolation round of the Players Era Championship at midnight ET Thursday morning leading into the Thanksgiving holiday. Both of these teams split their 2 tournament games against Gonzaga and UNLV, losing to the Zags and beating the Rebels. Although, you would have never known Alabama was 0-1 when it played UNLV last night, as the Tide ran up the score 115-76 as if their point differential still mattered. Come to think of it, Maryland was in the same shoes as UNLV on Tuesday, as the Terps were obliterated by the Zags 100-61 – paving the way for Gonzaga to make the Players Era Championship against Michigan.

Having coached at Texas A&M for 6 seasons, Buzz Williams is very familiar with Nate Oats and the Alabama system. However, Oats has had his way with Williams the last 3 times their teams met on the hardwood, and I don’t expect that to change tonight – as there’s not much to write home about in regards to this Maryland offense. The Terps are 229th in effective field goal percentage, unreliable from inside and beyond the three-point line. Moreover, they are 4th nationally in percentage of points from the free throw line (KenPom), which just goes to show they don’t have much ability to create their own offense. Turnovers also plague this group; Maryland turns the ball over on more than 20% of its possessions (286th). To make matters worse, a large portion of those turnovers are unforced – highlighted by a 323rd rating in non-steal turnover percentage.

Alabama’s offensive makeup couldn’t be more different than Texas A&M. The Crimson Tide are highly efficient and are consistently one of the best offenses in the country under Oats’ lead. They are excellent at taking care of the ball, which shows in the numbers – as they rank 27th in overall turnover rate and 13th in non-steal turnover rate. Furthermore, the Tide love to shoot the deep ball, which Maryland has surrendered in bunches thus far. In fact, the Terps are 333rd in three-point rate allowed, which Gonzaga completely exploited last night en route to 14 made threes on 33 attempts. Oddly enough, the Tide had the same exact 14/33 three-point result in their route of UNLV. That’s the 3rd time in 4 games that the Tide have made at least 13 threes. Assuming that happens again here, ‘Bama should cruise to a win and cover.

Maryland vs Alabama prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide -12.5 (-112) at the time of publishing. Playable to -13.5.
