After a thrilling end to the WCC semifinals on Monday, the title game features a familiar face against a program looking to capture its first conference tournament title since 1997. Santa Clara was squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble prior to its victory over Saint Mary’s in the semifinal round, which gave Herb Sendek’s group a second victory against against a Quad 1 opponent this season and essentially locked them into the field of 68 as a result. The Broncos were able to win on a night where they didn’t play their best, overcoming a disastrous shooting night from the free-throw line — in which they shot 33% as a team. There’s an argument to be made that Santa Clara won’t be as focused after the way it won on Monday, but the other side of that coin is the Broncos should be able to play loose and free against a Gonzaga team that will have all of the expectations on its shoulders in this one.

The Bulldogs won each of the first 2 meetings by a combined 19 points, and both final scores were a bit deceiving compared to the game scripts of each matchup. Both teams have no trouble playing with pace and the Broncos should be more comfortable playing in a game that features plenty of possessions and up-and-down action. Not only is the Santa Clara offense is among the best at the mid-major level (ranked 19th in adjusted efficiency per BartTorvik), but the Broncos also do a great job of attacking the offensive glass (19th in offensive rebounding rate), which is essential against a Gonzaga team that is one of the better units in the nation on the defensive glass. It’s also worth mentioning that ever since Gonzaga lost star forward Braden Huff to injury over a month ago, Mark Few’s team hasn’t quite been the same on offense, especially when Graham Ike is off the floor. And while Ike should be a force in the paint against a Santa Clara frontcourt that wasn’t able to contain him in either meeting earlier this season, the Broncos should be able to limit the production from an inconsistent Bulldogs backcourt. As long as Santa Clara is able to knock down some threes against a Gonzaga defense that welcomes outside shots (ranked 310th in 3-point rate allowed), the Broncos should be able to stay within this number, and potentially be live to win the game outright.
