Central Michigan vs San Jose State Pickswise Expert Predictions
The Central Michigan Chippewas head west to open their season in the Bay Area at CEFCU Stadium against the San Jose State Spartans. This is the debut game for head coach Matt Drinkall, who faces an uphill climb. CMU won just 13 games in the past three seasons, as veteran coach Jim McElwain had the proud Chips mostly unprepared. QB Joe Labas is expected to start under center, and he was on his way to a solid start before falling to a season-ending injury. He is a one-trick pony, and not a player who can tuck and run, especially after an injury. WR Tyson Davis is his right-hand man in short and intermediate routes, while RB Trey Cornist is expected to top the charts in the backfield.
For San Jose State, head coach Ken Niumatalolo steered the Spartans to a 7-6 record last season. The former Navy football boss is a very good coach, and he was able to return QB Walker Eget and RB Floyd Chalk IV. The incoming transfers at receiver are promising, too, but practices and real-game situations are two different things, and San Jose State has a lot of jelling to do. With the Spartans breaking in a cadre of new receivers, and the Chippewas introducing a new coaching staff and system, points could be at a premium early on. Let’s side with the Under.
