Ohio vs Western Michigan Pickswise Expert Predictions

Point Spread Pick
Western Michigan +1.0(-110)

Ohio earned a massive win in the MAC race when the Bobcats defeated Miami (OH) at home last week in what was your typical midweek MACtion type of game. The Bobcats and the RedHawks took a 3-3 stalemate into halftime before the ‘Bobs extended the lead by a score of 10-6 going into the 4th quarter. In that final period, 28 combined points were scored thanks to multiple explosive plays that were non-existent in the 3 quarters prior. Those types of games are the reason we love MACtion, and Tuesday’s offering of Ohio vs. Western Michigan sets up to be just as thrilling. The Bobcats and the Broncos are 2 of the 4 remaining 4-1 teams in the MAC, so this game absolutely influences who gets to play for the conference title.

In a matchup perceivably so close on paper, I’m looking for little advantages that I believe will tilt the game one way or another. I’ve found a few, and they all seem to favor Western Michigan. First, the Broncos will be at home, where they are 4-1 overall this season. Meanwhile, all 3 of the Bobcats’ losses were on the road. Obviously, I’m not going to count losses at Rutgers and Ohio State against them, but I can dock them a bit for the loss at Ball State – especially their 2nd half performance in that game. Second, having not played since November 1, WMU benefits from a mini-bye heading into this game. Ohio’s game against Miami last week was a grind, so a couple of extra days of rest should benefit the home team here.

In addition to being at home on extra rest, I like the advantages WMU seemingly has on the ground defensively. The Broncos have one of the strongest run defenses in the country, sitting 24th in rush yards allowed per game and 22nd in yards per rush attempt on the season as a whole. More recently, since Week 7, WMU is 3rd nationally in PPA per rush allowed outside of garbage time. A strong run defense is going to be huge on what projects to be a cold, windy night. Taking care of the ball is also essential in extreme conditions, and WMU QB Broc Lowry does just that. In fact, he has just 1 interception on his only turnover-worthy play of the season. Yes, I said that correctly – only 1 turnover-worthy play through 9 games. In comparison, Ohio QB Parker Navarro, though a perpetual big-play threat, has 8 interceptions and 11 turnover-worthy plays – 9 in the last 5 games. That worries me, especially considering the Bobcats will be on the road.

Too many angles point to Western Michigan for me, so I’m happy to take the Broncos at a short price.
