Vanderbilt Commodores vs Virginia Tech Hokies Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 09/06/25

The Vanderbilt Commodores head to Blacksburg on Saturday night to face the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Commodores won this game last year in a shocker, and it was the spot where both Vandy and Diego Pavia announced themselves on the national stage. Vandy certainly has to be taken seriously now, although they won’t sneak up on anyone this season. Rolling into Blacksburg for a night game is a tough assignment, too (*cue Enter Sandman*). Vandy easily won its opener last week over Charleston Southern, and every part of the team looked good. The Hokies opened at South Carolina, falling 24-11 in a tough matchup. Playing their second straight SEC opponent is no picnic (although I imagine years ago when they scheduled Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it didn’t seem too difficult!). This game is a pure toss-up, but I think I lean toward Tech to come away with the win and avenge last year’s loss.

These teams are very similar. Both have veteran QBs that are the heart and soul of the team. Both have heavily rebuilt teams through the portal, and therefore carry a lot of unknowns. I am not high on Vanderbilt this season, personally. Their gutsy QB and spread option attack snuck up on people last year, but they got much easier to defend as the season went along and opponents knew what to expect. I’m not sure how much we can believe in the Hokies, though. Drones is a stud, but he is turnover and injury prone. He does, however, have some really good receivers to throw to, and their new OC wants to run a more high-octane attack. We didn’t see it much last week, but teams make huge leaps between Week 1 and Week 2, and the Hokies have plenty of room to do that. I am playing that angle, and I look for the Hokies to win at home.
