Diamondbacks vs Dodgers Pickswise Expert Predictions
The NL West is the site of another hotly-contested showdown on Tuesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks are set to take on the suddenly reeling Los Angeles Dodgers. The World Series favorites have dropped 4 straight, all at home, but they should be in a good position to get back into the win column in this one. Even in a win on Monday, Arizona allowed 5 runs, as pitching continues to be an issue for the Diamondbacks. In fact, Arizona is just 25th in team ERA to this point (4.70), while also sitting at 22nd in hits allowed and WHIP. The struggles should continue for starter Ryne Nelson (5.13 xERA, 45.2% hard-hit rate, 24.3% chase rate) on Tuesday, a pitcher whose advanced metrics and batted-ball data don’t suggest that improvement is coming. While he did just toss 2 scoreless innings against this loaded Dodgers lineup less than 2 weeks ago, I could certainly still see Nelson and the inconsistent Arizona bullpen struggling in this one.
On the other side, Los Angeles is sending Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the mound, which is typically a great sign for the Dodgers. The Japanese ace is in the midst of an outstanding start to the season (2.12 ERA, 30% strikeout rate, 31.2% whiff rate, 61.7% ground-ball rate). Unlike last season, the Dodgers’ ace has hit the ground running and has only surrendered 12 earned runs over his first 51 innings pitched, while striking out 59 in the process. Yamamoto has been tremendous against any level of competition, so he shouldn’t struggle against this Arizona lineup. All things considered, let’s take the Dodgers to find the win column and by at least 2 runs at home.
