After winning a franchise record 14 consecutive games to begin the month of August, the Milwaukee Brewers have seemingly fallen back to Earth, winning just 3 of their last 9 games. The Brewers dropped 2 out of 3 games to the San Francisco Giants over the weekend and will now welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks to American Family Field on Monday for the first of a 4-game series. Arizona is 3 games under .500 and 5.5-games back in the NL Wild Card standings, but they’re coming off an important series win over the team they’re chasing, taking 2 out of 3 from the Cincinnati Reds. The remaining schedule for the D-backs is extremely difficult and they head out to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers once they finish up with Milwaukee. It’s going to take a herculean effort for Arizona to get back in the mix, but it starts today in Milwaukee.

The Diamondbacks will have left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on the hill Monday night, and it’s safe to say that his 2 seasons in Arizona have not gone as planned. Rodriguez enters Monday’s start with a 5.40 ERA and a 5.84 ERA over his last 8 outings. While he pitched well against the Brewers on April 11, surrendering just 2 earned runs across 6.1 innings, Milwaukee went on to win that ballgame 7-0. Countering for the Brewers is Brandon Woodruff, who has been excellent in his 8 starts this season. Woodruff spent much of the season rehabbing from shoulder surgery, but didn’t look like he missed a beat since his return in early July. The 32-year-old owns a 2.47 ERA, posted quality starts in 5 of his 8 outings, and the Brewers are 7-1 in the games he’s started in. I’m going to back Woodruff and the Brewers to cover the run line at home to start the series.
