The Athletics wrap up their 3-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon in a rubber match after Baltimore evened the series with a 7-4 win on Saturday. These 2 teams are on completely opposite trajectories of late, with the A’s going 3-9 across their last 12 games while the Orioles have gone 7-1 across their last 8. Baltimore is slated as the favorite in the close out game of the series and will hand the ball to right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano, making his 13th start of the season. For the Athletics, it will be left-hander Jacob Lopez, who has been used both out of the bullpen and in the starting role. Lopez will be making his fourth start and eighth appearance for the A’s with 20 innings of work this season.
Over the course of a dozen starts, Sugano has been extremely serviceable — posting a 3.04 ERA while providing at least 5.0 innings in his last 9 starts. To be fair, Sugano’s underlying metrics don’t look great — his 4.53 xERA projects regression and his whiff rate and strikeout rate fall in the bottom 6th percentile. However, the A’s have been spiraling out of control after a strong start to the season. Jacob Lopez has pitched only 20.0 innings as compared to Sugano’s 71.0, and the results have not been great. Lopez owns a 7.20 ERA and has been much more effective out of the ‘pen than he has been in the starting role. In his last 2 appearances, Lopez has given up 12 earned runs in just 6.0 innings of action — that won’t cut it against a surging Baltimore lineup. I’m backing the Orioles to close out the series with a win and extend their series win streak to 3.
