Boston Red Sox vs San Diego Padres Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 08/08/25

The Boston Red Sox head west to take on the San Diego Padres in what shapes up to be a surprisingly intriguing matchup. These teams could not be more similar on both sides of the ball and in record. Walker Buehler, now pitching outside of the NL West, faces a familiar foe. He brings high end strikeout stuff and high potential, though it hasn’t shown quite yet…Walker is certainly trending in the right direction. His ERA was once in the high 6.00’s but has been able to limit his runs allowed to 3 or under in each of his last 5 outings. Opposing him is Nick Pivetta, who has shown improved control recently, reducing walks and increasing ground balls compared to earlier in the season. He enters with a career best 2.73 ERA and an 11-3 record across 128.2 innings. This suggests Pivetta is pitching with better command and could challenge the Red Sox lineup more effectively than before.

Offensively, Boston leans on consistent contributors like recently extended Roman Anthony and Alex Bregman at the top of the order. Bregman has slowly returned from injury and is starting to take form again. Trevor Story has had an amazing run of games since the beginning of July and the lineup is starting to get a lot more consistent night in and night out. The Padres, on the other hand, had a weird week. They went 4-2 dropping a game in each series to the lowly Cardinals and DBacks. They have a great home record at 36-19 but something tells me they won’t be overly dominant against this scrappy Boston team. San Diego is just 14-19 this year against the American League which suggests the -175 on SD’s money line is too steep of a price to pay. I don’t have a major play in this one but my lean is most definitely with the Red Sox.
