Chicago Cubs vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 04/05/26

The Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Guardians will play a doubleheader on Sunday after Saturday’s postponement. The first game will feature a pitching matchup between the Cubs’ newest starter Edward Cabrera and the Guardians’ Slade Cecconi. The popular opinion will be that the Cubs will beat up on Cecconi after a rough first start for him, but neither of these teams have been mashing the ball early in the season. They both rank in the bottom half of the league in average, while also ranking near the bottom in power. The combination doesn’t add up to many runs.

Cabrera showed in his first start why his future is so bright, and Chicago felt like it needed to add him to their starting rotation. He mowed down the Los Angeles Angels, allowing just 1 hit over 6 innings, while striking out 5 and walking just 1 batter. Surprisingly, the Angels have been an average offense so far this season, and much better than the Guardians, which means it could be another good start from Cabrera here.

Cecconi struggled in his first start with 6 earned runs over 4.1 innings in his first start against the Seattle Mariners. While his numbers last season and the start of this year don’t lend much confidence, he showed some inconsistency last season. There were some games where opposing teams got to him early and ran up the score, but there were other games where he showed elite stuff and had long outings with barely any damage. It’ll be interesting to see how he fares against a struggling Cubs offense.
