The Chicago Cubs (18-12) open their first NL Central series of 2025 tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates (11-19) at PNC Park. The Cubs, leading the division, have dominated the Pirates in recent years, winning the season series for 10 consecutive seasons. Chicago enters the matchup with one of MLB’s most balanced rosters, ranking top five in every major statistical category. Offensively, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson have provided timely hitting, while the bullpen has stepped up despite the absence of closer Ryan Pressly. Matthew Boyd takes the mound for the Cubs. After a strong 2024 season with a 2.72 ERA over eight starts, Boyd has kept the momentum going pitching to the tune of a 2.54 ERA. His strikeout numbers are also higher which is promising.
The Pirates counter with right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski. Mlodzinski, primarily a reliever, had a solid 2024 campaign with a 3.38 ERA over 50.2 innings. Now he’s in a starting role for Pittsburgh and it hasn’t been all that great to start. Sitting at a 6.96 ERA, he has a 1-3 record and has only given up less than 3 runs once this year. Pittsburgh aims to rebound after a 3-3 road trip to Los Angeles, where defensive lapses and bullpen issues cost them additional wins. Shortstop Oneil Cruz has been a bright spot, hitting .258 with 8 home runs, 16 RBIs, and an MLB-leading 12 stolen bases. Back the Cubs to keep rolling in this unprecedented start to the year.
