It’s only early, but a weekend series between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres has some interesting implications in the National League West. The implications might not be as big if it weren’t the Rockies, but the team that has been near the bottom of the National League since 2019 has a chance to jump to second in the division if it can take a couple games from the Padres this weekend. The chances of them maintaining this play for the entire season aren’t great, but it has certainly been a fun story in the first month.

Tomoyuki Sugano’s 2 starts for the Rockies in his first season with the team are a big reason why they are sitting at 6-7. In 10.2 innings, the Japanese right-hander allowed just 6 hits and 2 earned runs with 9 strikeouts. He had a bit of a rough time in his first MLB season with the Baltimore Orioles, but the promise he showed when he came to North America is starting to shine through statistically. One thing to keep an eye on is his 4.07 xERA. That could be a sign of regression from Sugano’s 1.69 ERA.

One pitcher who isn’t living up to his billing is the Padres’ starter Walker Buehler. It has been a struggle for Buehler since 2021, when he was one of the majors’ best pitchers, and it has been a rough start to the season with a 9.45 ERA in his first 2 starts. The righty has only been in the games for 6.2 innings, allowing 8 hits and 7 earned runs. With the Rockies’ offense performing well to start the year, it won’t be an easy game for the struggling starter.
