God bless you for reading a piece about the Los Angeles Angels vs the Colorado Rockies. You are either the purist of baseball fans, or the most degenerate of gamblers, and either way, you are probably my people! We head to Denver on Friday for a game no one cares about — maybe not even the teams who are involved. These squads have combined for 12 consecutive losses, and neither has won a game since sometime last week. But this is a big game for the Rockies, in a strange way: their next win puts them ahead of the 2024 White Sox and keeps them from being the answer to a trivia question. I am taking the Rockies to win at plus money.

The Angels are giving the ball to rookie pitcher Mitch Farris. Farris will be making his fourth career start, and he has held up fine so far — posting a useful start in 2 of his 3 appearances. But he is a soft-tosser who relies on breaking pitches, and that is the worst thing to hear about a guy about to make his first start at elevation. The Rockies aren’t in a much better position, as they turn to their own young starter in Bradley Blalock. Blalock has been drilled in his last 4 outings, but working in his favor is that the Angels lead the league in strikeouts. Both of these guys will probably be out of the game early, and then it is up to the bullpens — neither of which can be trusted. But I guess I like the Colorado bullpen pitching at home better? I think I mostly just like the storyline of Colorado chasing its 42nd win of the season. I’m going with it.
